Someone who can play an instrument to accompany themselves as well as sing?

I realise that X factor isn't about instrumentals.

Matt Cardle and James Arthur instantly come to mind.

Well the battle would be between James Arthur and Luke Friend I'd say.

Max in series 12 could've fought better if he wasn't sabotaged like nearly every other contestant that wasn't Louisa in that year, but sadly it wasn't meant to be.

Matt Cardle if he'd have also been more Indie I think would've been better.

Freddy in this series was okay.

Didn't Ben Mills play guitar and piano?

One definition. But perhaps the best all round musician might be the one who has the greatest understanding of their own voice and the capacity to use it in the most flexible way?

Also, they might be able to play other instruments, but might choose to focus on singing when performing because that is what they do best compared to other specialist instrumentalists.

I've seen Leona perform playing a piano and drums. Apparently, she can pick out some stuff on the guitar. But for me her claim to be a musician is in the range of songs that she can sing from Ave Mariah to One More Sleep.

Matt Cardle more indie? Check out Seven Summers his pre XF band. They were a full on indie band. And if you want musicianship, Matt plays acoustic and electric guitar, piano and drums. He played most of the instruments on his second and third albums, as well as producing them. He has stepped back a little from the production from his fourth studio album which is being released in 2017.

Sorry to quote myself. But I was too late to edit.

I recorded Jimmy Page and Leona Lewis performing Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin together... For me there were several moments that still seem a little unreal [like] realising just how technically and musically accomplished Leona Lewis is as an artist. I've not worked with many singers in the pop world who can discuss coloratura technique, and operas by Purcell and Bellini. [...] Leona can really sing with heart and soul, balanced with quite astounding technique.

Just to make the point that musicality isn't just about being able to play physical instruments.

But the thread is about who is the best all round musician, not best vocalist, although undoubtedly many of the winners are excellent vocalists, who work hard on that particular instrument.

I understood that. My earlier post addressed the point. However, it is also possible to challenge the terms of any thread in the interests of discussion.

The ability to play other instruments may not be used much in performance even though it exists. And that being able to use the vocal instrument in a range of ways might be seen as being an all round musician in some way.

I suppose that the ability to produce in a recording studio might also come into play?

I agree. I know that voice is an instrument in itself, but I was trying to define it differently.

Instruments are not important for people on X factor, especially the winners. But it's important for people doing the hard graft of gigging in pubs and clubs before they get to the X factor auditions. You either have to play an instrument yourself or have someone/ a band playing for you, otherwise you are essentially doing karaoke.

I think most people, unless they win when they are 15 or 16 have probably done the local gig circuit for a while, just to get used to performing?

I know that his gone more Indie after the show, I'm just saying that he should've been more like that on the show rather than being another bland X Factor winner.

JA and Saara. They seem like genuine artists to me rather than just singers.

You mean someone (just one person, both classical & pop) who can pull this type of song with a unique spin whilst playing instrument?

Fleur - her sax rhythms are what set that single apart.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Of those in the lives? Leona (You don't sing with such technical ability without musicianship) and Matt C(not a fan but credit where due), but most of the the best all round musicians/vocalists are long gone by the end of Judges Houses or else you'll usually find them doing backing music/vocals on the show .(It is a mark of real ability to be able to make someone sound good and not steal the show even when you can sing circles around them but your job is to highlight them not you..The backing vocalists are generally fantastic singers)

Throw in who has the ability to write their own material which instantly puts them on a higher level than an act who sings someone else's song . You get a better emotion for a song which is self written as something deep sometimes have gone into writing

Probably James Arthur and Matt Cardle, as they write a lot of their music themselves. Whereas Little Mix and Leona rely on others to write their music sadly, they're great singers however.

I'd agree with this
