Hardly. The opposite in fact. 1-3 were the result of Lucas doing what he wanted and surrounding himself with yes people.
Jedi is a much loved film, it's usually just the Star Wars tourists who dismiss it. Nothing wrong the Ewoks, they may have been small and cuddly but they were also mean hunters and human eating psychos (though I won't deny Wookiees would have been even better)

TFA was intentionally filled with familiar beats / story because it had the burden of trying to re-establish the entire brand of the franchise. It needed to feel like the OT, so it therefore uses the OT template. And that's just fine, because Star Wars has always been a remix of the familiar.
