Never listen to it myself, but isn't 5 Live a sport and breaking news station ?

Even as a football fan I know somebody passing away is more important than a phone in..

Cannot really complain.

Seems to be back on anyway.

A 5 Live producer did not feel it was possible to interrupt coverage of a Croatia Football match to announce the Political Assassination of the 21st Century. (Jo Cox).

They waited till "half time" to tell us that a British MP had been murdered in the street a few days before the Eu Referendum.

I don't think it is unreasonable to conclude that 5 Live is "broken".

It wasn't Croatia, it was England v Wales (16 June).

On that day they had a full report at half time and then cancelled the post match phone in for a news special at 4pm. Her death wasn't announced until around 5pm at a police news conference.

That's the issue. To interrupt 606 for a brakimg news item about her desth os one thing. To interrupt it for a 20 minute special shoes a lacl of perspective about the degree of inportance of the news.

Minor British politician, not even in the govenment, killed by a nutcase hardly the "Political Assassination of the 21st Century". I would use that for one of heads of state killed or even the Russian ambassador shot in front of the media recently.

No - that was earlier in the day (England v Wales). I should have checked who was playing when the Police Press Conference announced her death moments after 5pm. It was Ukraine vs Northern Ireland (not Croatia). They had just kicked off. Nothing much was happening but Ukraine almost hit the post and this was deemed more important than an immediate return to the studio for a Newsflash.
Wrong call IMHO.

Minor British politician.
Wow.

5 Live is a British radio station and I am (obviously) discussing British Politics.....

A Political murder by the Alt-right/Far Right (confirmed later) is a huge.....huge story. Slightly more important than the early stages of a Football tournament.

But you did not write "British Politician Assassination of the <whatever period it was>".

I would define a political assassination by the Far Right as one by an organised group. This one was done by a lone nutcase.

You appear incapable of following the details of a criminal trial so I have no idea why you are "chatting" about it on an Entertainment Forum.

The medical evidence presented (none) indicated that the trigger/motivation for the crime was not as you suggest.

"Celebrity" deaths have become newsworthy over Christmas and they now take precedence over anything else.

At 3pm this afternoon BBC News had "breaking news" that Richard Adams, author of "Watership Down" had died. It was a blatant attempt to grab viewers because they know that viewers will go, "Oh look another one dead. Isn't it awful?"

Sky's 3pm bulletin began with the live shots outside George Michael's Highgate home while reporting how generous he was.

Liz Smith was another, announced yesterday, and now Carrie Fisher. I can almost see the newsroom editors desperately searching for as many deaths as possible, no matter how obscure the deceased, in order to get the ratings.

The way it's going they'll be reporting tomorrow that a contestant from "The Generation Game" in 1975 has died with live reporting from outside the home where he lived in Oldham. They'll tell us what prizes he remembered on the conveyor belt at the end.

Talking of conveyor belts . . . . .

Reading the above it seems 5 live is damned if it does, damned if it doesn't. I've no doubt each situation is judged on its merits versus what is being broadcast at the time. On the whole I think the editors and producers make the right judgments and are quick to adapt the schedule to bring us important breaking news as it happens, but they are human and not every call is clear cut.

If your point is that people who are not worthy of headline status are being granted such celebrity, fine, by all means give some examples. But using someone who starred in several of the most popular and successful films of all time as evidence for your argument is ridiculous. Carrie Fisher appeared in over 40 films and numerous TV shows and wrote several novels, non-fiction books, screenplays and stage plays.

Calling her a "celebrity" in supposedly ironic quote marks is just childish.

I missed about where it was organised by "the Alt Right / Far Right". I am not sure what the Alt Right are but that is written as if it was organised by some sort of Far Right group. He certainly followed various people, organisations on the Right but I did not hear any evidence that he was involved in any of those organisations or controlled by them. He was a nutcase.

Yeh mate, this is sort of how the news has *always* worked, not just at Christmas. Stories are prioritised by perceived public interest, rather than any kind of importance or impact they might have on the world. Glad to see you've finally worked this out. Well done. And referring to any of the above with ironic quote marks as "celebrities" makes no sense see they were all genuine celebrities, but still...
