I remember watching the show at the time with a daughter, who'd been the victim of pretty grim bullying in school (and the repercussions are still evident, all these years later). I was interested in what my daughter would think.

She was adamant that Jade was no bully - she didn't warm to Shilpa, and neither did I.

I liked Jade and she was no bully but the fact that you - and your daughter- did not like Shilpa does not excuse what went off.

I agree with you.

It was such a horrible and sad few weeks.

Jade might not have been, but her friends Jo and Dannielle certainly were, and Jade seemed to be trying to impress them.

She seemed likeable enough but nothing remarkable. What annoyed me was that people who really couldn't have given a damn about Shilpa or Big Brother, were voting for her as a protest against racism. It really spoilt the final although she may have won anyway.

Don't think so - it was a mother and that waste of space that was her husband she was trying to keep happy and therefore Jade got sucked into it all because Jade was a bigger name at the time.

I don't think racism came into play at all, and I was pro-Shilpa/anti-Jade that series.

Jade was Jade. She was almost the exact same person she was in BB3, except she lacked the sort of 'dumb innocence' she had in BB3.

Her arguments in BB3 often drew sympathy or laughter because most of them were just ridiculous. However, in CBB her arguments had an air of nastiness to them. They had lost their innocence.

Jade was insecure and flew off the handle in BB3 all the time, but the housemates generally didn't stand for it. Kate, Alex, Adele... they all put her in her place when she spoke to them like crap - something Shilpa was reluctant to do (not that she should've had to, but it made Jade look ten times worse).

I think she was unfortunate and a mixture of things added to her 'demise'.

Had she argued with a white British celebrity, everyone would've probably rolled their eyes and said 'typical Jade', especially if the celebrity fought back, then it would've just been a typical Big Brother argument.
It didn't help her at all that she was picking on someone who was quite reserved and awkward. Shilpa came across as harmless whereas if she was more aggressive, like Adele was with her, then viewers probably wouldn't have given it a second thought.

An unfortunate, unpleasant time for the show. A time I like to forget. Hated the way the media blew it all up.

Don't get me wrong, Jade's treatment of Shilpa was unnecessary to say the least, and she only disliked her because of her own insecurities, but that was nothing new in Big Brother and the treatment Jade received afterwards was ridiculously harsh.

I still get angry about the over the top use of the word bully especially in the Jade situation.

She wasn't a bully. She was a simple, pretty harmless woman and that's it.

I thought Shilpa was quite feisty and handled it pretty well. "Your claim to fame is this, good for you".
I don't think she needed to say anything else after then. That's a mic drop moment.
Which is why I don't think CBB5 entered bullying territory.

Now BB3 on the otherhand is more questionable, with Jade loudly laughing and joking with her friends about how she'd annihilate Sophie, meanwhile Sophie was by herself in the other room. So very high school.
Didn't help that Sophie was as passive as a person could be, which meant they never clashed head-to-head and it came across as more unnecessary and cruel.

I don't think Jade ever set out to be so nasty, but sometimes you have to call a stick a stick when it's right there infront of you.

She was a disgrace, that phrase showed how ignorant and jealous she was and that she had to have a dig at her race.

Shilpa held her head high through the whole sordid thing, and the others ruined reality tv in one fell swoop.

She was a absolute bully, whether she meant to be or not. Inn BB, CBB and BTR she picked a target, bitched about them, got a few sidekicks to indulge in her whispering campaign and ensured her chosen victim became isolated form the group. In BB and CBB, it seemed to stem from jealousy as she chose women who were more attractive, more intelligent, more articulate and much classier in their demeanor than she could ever hope to be.
BTR was more like out and out bullying where she picked the one she saw as the weakest in the group and chipped away at him until his already fragile self esteem broke. She had a smirk on her face and seemed to enjoy every second of Riks humiliation and unease.

I think if Jade went in alone and not with her mother and boyfriend it wouldn't have been as bad. Shilpa could handle herself very well and don't think she was bullied. The series had a lot going for it with Jermaine Jackson, Dirk Benedict, Leo Sayer, Donny Tourette and the guy from Steps. The master and servants task with Jade going in with her family saw Donny go over the wall and Leo broke out because he run out of under pants. But it started out well the late arrival of Jade was the problem. If she went in on day 1 alone instead of day 3 with her mother and Jack it would have been better. They had all bonded by then.

bib - I totally agree.

Many people even now think that Jade was thick and ignorant but she was far fom that and the fact that she was one of the few after being on the show then had a successfull business proves that.

When she was first came into the house - BB3 - she acted to be dense and a fool because the year before Helen almost won ( the difference was that Helen was truly dense - and lovely - and she remains my favourite housemate of all time )

Jade's mother and her husband are ignorant people but Jade felt that she had to be loyal to them.

Jade was no fool - but she was weak - and that is why it would have been much better for her if she had gone in on her own because had she done so I doubt this would have happened imo.

Excellent post. As time goes by, it seems to be that true (old-school) BB viewers/fans are most placed to assess the situation correctly.

I don't understand the argument that Jade wasn't racist, merely stupid and ignorant. Well, that's the essence of racism - it's borne of idiocy, ignorance and stupidity. Jade WAS racist, stupid and ignorant and scared of anyone that she couldn't identify with...As were the ghastly Jo and Danielle. They were a holy triumverate of racist, nasty idiots. Jack Tweed and Jackiieeeeeey completed the glorious picture.
I completely agree. I can't believe some of the posts I am reading in this thread. Several posters have even pointed out the racist remarks that were made in the house by her and yet nobody has responded to those. Just another barrage of "PC gone mad, too sensitive, etc" dressed up in other words. I watched that series live as it aired, they treated Shilpa horribly. I don't know if this forum or the profile of the average viewer has changed or what because behaviour like this has been getting more and more excused for a while on here. There is no defending or excusing her behaviour.

And Shilpa was not stuck up whatsoever. She was distant, sure, but not stuck up. She dealt with the whole situation with class and I am glad she won.

Even then.

I'm no fan of Jade, didn't particularly find her outbursts amusing in BB3 and Shilpa was about the only person I liked in her series, so Jade's behaviour towards Shilpa did rile me, just not for the same reasons as the media.

I'm glad she won, too, but supporting Shilpa doesn't mean you have to dislike Jade, or think of her as some kind of racist.

My opinion has never changed, and never will. The media blew it out of proportion and most viewers blindlessly followed their train of thought (many probably didn't even watch the show and just jumped on the bandwagon). Anyone who watched BB3 will know exactly who Jade is, what she's about, and how she goes about things.

Her behaviour towards Shilpa was no different than her behaviour towards her BB3 housemates. Many have discussed her behaviour towards Sophie on here plenty of times, stating how unpleasant it was. Was THAT racist? Was all the times she snapped at Adele racist?

Like I said, Jade was Jade; to me she wasn't any different in CBB than she was in BB3.

I re-watched CBB5 in February and it was really fascinating to watch again, given how much the show has changed. It's hard to believe how big the show was back then and how everyone was talking about it. Honestly watching it in 2016, it felt quite tame by todays standards. I loved Shilpa and I'm glad she won and I liked Jade in BB3, although I was disappointed in her on CBB. I didn't think she was a racist and I still don't. Her awful treatment of Shilpa was more class motivated as opposed to racially motivated. I honestly think if Jade was racist and took a dislike towards Shilpa solely because of her race, she would've taken a dislike to her the moment she entered, she didn't, she got along with Shilpa in the first week or so and even took her side over her mother's during the arguments between Shilpa and Jackiey (she even took Jackiey aside at one point and told her how she was being rude when she wasn't making an effort to pronounce Shilpa's name properly). In regards to Jade's comments such as "Shilpa Poppadom", yes those words do have racial connotations to them but do I think Jade said them with the intention of being racist? No. It was more down to Jade's ignorance and unawareness of what she was actually saying and unfortunately for her, it came across much darker than thinking "East Anglia is abroad" or what not.

As someone mentioned above, one thing that still annoys me to this day is how Danielle got away with it all with just a slap on the wrist whereas Jade and Jo had a much harder time. Danielle was by far the worst one during the incident. The hostility began with Danielle and she instigated most of the bullying and bitching to begin with, the only difference is that she did it in a bitchy, two-faced and cowardly manner whilst lapping it up by laughing like hyeena during the oxo cube argument, which makes her actions by far the worst of everyone involved imo. One thing that didn't help Jade was the big argument over the oxo cubes where Jade was loud towards a quite and timid Shilpa, which made her come across even more badly.

I also think Jack got an easy ride too, simply because he was a man. He was just awful and imo him and Danielle were the worst. I felt Jade and Jo had redeeming qualities outside of their actions on CBB, which is why I'm more forgiving towards those two but Danielle and Jack are pond-life.

Whilst BB8 was the first series to have significantly lower ratings than any of its predecessors, I do think CBB5 is the real root of the decline. For me, it no longer felt acceptable to say you loved BB after January 2007.

I'm currently watching CBB5 on youtube. I haven't got to any of the controversial Shilpa/Jade stuff yet. I do remember it though, and I certainly don't condone what Jade, Jo and Danielle did, but Shilpa did kind of look down on Jade and her mum when they first set foot in the house.

Jackiey thought that Shilpa was looking down her nose at her because of the completely different backgrounds they came from. She was trying too hard, but ended up looking like a plonker and embarrassed Jade.

Jade kept her nose out of it, and apart from flaring up at Ken, was being fairly good natured.

That was until her mum left and the house was reunited. Mixing with Jo and Danielle really brought out the worst in her.
It was shameful, but she learnt from it and I think she really was sorry.

As far as Leo Sayer goes.. he was an absolute 'anchor'!

Hmm....I think there's two views/sides/aspect to this....

The best way I can describe my theory is this: when I'm driving in my car, and a driver in front of me behaves badly, I note their car registration - here in Ireland each county has its own specific registration. And if their reg indicates they are from Cork, I can find myself saying 'stupid Cork eejit'. Or if they are elderly and grey-haired, I'm afraid I'll sometimes say 'stupid geriatric' (despite the fact that I'm grey-haired myself). It's a knee-jerk, categorising someone thing...it's not right, but it doesn't actually mean that I think people from Cork, or elderly people, are stupid.

To me, one example...the Shilpa Poppadom/Stupid Cork eejit' is less than desirable, but it doesn't mean the perpetrator thinks the others are lesser, or inferior... whereas the other example, which I would class as REAL racism is actually thinking people of a certain race/ethnicity/geographic origin are inferior. That's a whole different, and far more ugly, kettle of fish (sadly, I have elderly relatives who do actually think like that...it's awful).

In an ideal world, no-one would ever categorise another person, but in real life, most of us do, in the heat of the moment, when we're annoyed. It's not big, and it's not clever (to quote Cameron from BB4!), but it's a world away from being racist, in my opinion.

...and that's one reason why I describe it as the very sad CBB....

The first time I stumbled upon BB1, I thought I was watching....wait for it...The Open University...

It was late at night, and my husband was working nights, so I had free reign of the remote...and I was a fierce 'twiddler'. I twiddled onto Channel 4, and there was a group of adults sitting around talking.

Ten years since Goody and her gang killed CBB stone dead

Oh for the days before that fateful year, they were good times.
CBB(2006?) with George Pete Tracy Dennis Michael Chantelle etc was a high water mark and has never been bettered...IMHO.
