If your mum forgets to wash your socks, you should scold her in the face with a pan of chip fat.....

In the morning my old man watches the sign language version of BBC breakfast - he doesn't understand sign language - he's yet to give me a satisfactory reason explaining why.

I've never understood the fascination people have with HD vs sd, aspect ratios etc. I've read people on here saying they will watch nothing in sd as the pic quality is so bad. You'd think it looked like minecraft

Likewise. All the HD channels are off in an odd place in the EPG, so I watch in HD so when I press CH+/- I know what will be next.
And I worked on the first HD STB decoders over a decade ago.

What difference does it make? The programmes are still rubbish either way.

Hold on...Digital Spy was set up specifically to report on and discuss the digital TV industry. There is an enclave of people who talk about showbiz and celebrity tittle-tattle, but that is not its remit.

to be fair though on Virgin cable I can't tell the difference between SD and HD.
The HD channels look great on Virgin cable, even on my little 32 inch telly there's a big enough difference that it's worth watching the HD version where available, on my main 49 inch telly the SD channels look downright soft and fuzzy - definitely worth watching the HD equivalents which look great even at quite close viewing distances.

Oh I can beat this I know some people who had sky HD. Downgraded to SD so they could save £5 a month which they saved up to pay the duty on taking fags on holiday.

Their sky sports looks all fuzzy now but they say it's fine.

They do look like Minecraft half the time. Have you not seen the Legotastic picture quality on Yesterday and Drama? There are times when any hint of definition is wiped out by blocking and low bitrate fuzz.

Movies on Horror often look like they are being played from a knackered old VHS tape. Switch between E4 and Netflix for the Big Bang Theory is like night and day, E4 suddenly looks washed out and drab but Netflix the colours are bright and saturated.

My mum is the same. She uses buttons 1 , 2 and 3 mostly for normal bbc1, 2 and Itv ( her hd itv is for some reason, the wrong local news itv one).

What's SD and HD? Is it a bit like old money and new money? We have a basic colour Freeview telly which says it's "HD ready" but never understood what that means. Maybe when this mysterious HD starts it'll pick it up automatically then?

Wait till she has gone to bed, then take the TV to a nearby homeless shelter. She clearly does not deserve it and it could be enjoyed at its fullest elsewhere by people who will actually appreciate it.
