Top universities "no-go zones for Jews" says Baroness

Some of Britain's leading universities are becoming no-go zones for Jews because anti-Semitism is so rife says the first ever higher education adjudicator. Baroness Ruth Deech said that institutions may be failing to combat hatred against Jews as they are "afraid of offending" their potential benefactors from Gulf states. Jewish students claim they have been verbally abused and even physically attacked. The acedemic community is at the forefront of calls to boycott Israel. Among Jewish students there is gradually a feeling that there are certain universities that you should avoid such as SOAS Baroness Deech said.
The rest of the article is quite interesting. There has long been animosity towards Jews from muslim students but it appears to be getting worse if this article is correct.

Anti-Semitism is not rife at universities- to suggest so is alarmist and wrong

What a surprise. Nothing to see here, move on. Etc.

So the Government appointed adjudicator who presumably has done some research and has some evidence is definitely wrong because one student says so?

Maybe - maybe not?

Not a surprise.

Most people have seen the contorted faces of snowflakes marching through cities with the "No Cuts!" posters.

No they are wrong because they are equating political antipathy to Israel to anti-semitism and that is plainly a lie and a political stance. It's like saying anyone who was anti apartheid hated all whites.

Quote:
“Baroness Deech may not have allowed Jewish students to speak for themselves, but we did: research earlier this year by the Union of Jewish Students (UJS) showed that overwhelmingly, Jewish students are able to freely express their Jewish identities however they like”

One student - not. Tease arch by the UJS - yes.

I read about an unofficial experiment a couple of years ago ( no link sorry) at a uni where two students pinned flags to their door, one a Palestinian flag and one an Israeli.
The Palestinian was left untouched while the Israeli was torn down and left shredded outside the door by lunchtime.

Since teflon Tony Blair wanted them all in?

Yes. And now we have "grajuates" who've been to "Younee" with useless degrees and massive debts.

There's a serious shortage of skills-trained people which is part of the reason why we have to attract immigrants who are skills-trained from the EU.

If I were cynical I'd suggest that Blair engineered this to further drive the British down towards increasing unemployability and encourage immigration to help create a future Euro-race within the next 50 years.

You'd have to be more than cynical. 'Pathologically paranoid and xenophobic' would be nearer the mark.

And what does that have to do with anti-semitism? Those are political statements about nations not a race of people.

That doesn't surprise me unfortunately. I think there is a lot of anti Israel feeling among students and among the hard left.

What makes you think these protestors are "snowflakes"?

Don't understand at all so-called "liberals" who hate Israel when it is the only country in the middle-east where being "liberal" is even allowed. Try being gay in an of the other countries, or criticising the government, or the state religion.

Maybe its not 'Anti Semitism' but just anger at what the Israeli state gets up to. Even victimised people can become the oppressors.

The Israeli state does whatever is necessary to keep the Israeli people safe and prosperous. Given that their neighbours have vowed to wipe Israel off the face of the earth and attacked Israel countless times, what else would you have them do? It is up to the rest of the Middle-East to move into the 21st century (into the 20th century would be a start for some of them) and give their people the freedoms that we in the West enjoy.

A really good point you've made here. You're right. I have a friend who lives in Israel and he's very happy there.

It's just a minor point I guess...but nowhere does the Baroness actually use the phrase 'no-go areas' in the quotes in the article.

Another one of those stupid, grossly overused and frankly always extremely suspect phrases that people like to throw around with no basis in fact at all.

There's a long liberal tradition of anti-colonialism and respect for people to chose the be liberated from colonisers much like what the Palestinians and Arab Israelis want.
