Emmerdale: Brenda's Character
claremonts
27-12-2016
I know that Brenda has had her dramatic storylines in recent years, but all she seems to do now is take great delight in passing on any crumb of gossip that she can, and put her foot in it when an awkward situation arises.

Is this the role that Brenda is now meant to play (the village gossip)? as it's starting to become rather tedious, and i find Brenda very hard to watch, (so maybe credit is due to Lesley Dunlop for creating her characters traits in this way). Surely there must be more of her character to come than this, which we are seeing now.

It's sad and an insult to Lesley Dunlop's abilities that Brenda has become such a pathetic, bit part, frankly irritating character. She's capable of far far more.

She is sort of just there these days.

The brain tumour was her last decent storyline and that was ages ago now.

Which would be okay and almost welcome if she got anything substantial to do alongside it.

Did she not have that storyline where she bought that face cream and then try to sell it to people. But Carly found out that the cream was dodgy and she tried to get it all back as it was dangerous stuff

Yes, but I wouldn't go as far as calling that a 'storyline'. It was a silly comedy filler plot of the week.

I realised the other night how much she's become like Viv.

Viv was married to Bob, Brenda is married to Bob.
Viv worked in the cafe/post office, Brenda works in the cafe.
Both love to gossip and nosey into other people's business.

Now Brenda just needs the daft clothes and a doctorate.

I was thinking how pointless Brenda is, only this evening.

All she seems to do is stay in the cafe. Can't remember the last time I've seen her in a different location

Soaps need characters like Brenda they can't all be highly dramatic and in every scene, some have to be a bit in the background to make the village work, I think Lesley plays her well, she can carry dramatic stories also blend into the back story. Very good actor.

I do agree with this and it would seem that the writers have no idea what to do with her. Her constant clumsy comments are so irritating.

She really annoys me. She clearly doesn't care about how rude she comes across or the privacy of others.

I just wish they would stop this busybody trait that they have landed her with. I am surprised no one has yet given her a slap over it. Please give Brenda(Lesley) a decent storyline and get her away from what she has been made into.

Whatever you think of Viv she deserved a better exit than that she got.

Viv at her peak would never have been a contender for the axe. Blyth should have persevered with her (although I got the impression it was a personal issue hence the appalling exit storyline) but I don't blame him for ruining the character. That happened the couple of years previous to him.

I'm glad Deena Payne complained about her exit though.

I disagree - for me she's one of the worst characters ED has ever had and I think she deserved the exit she got.

Right? They screwed over Viv's character for what? Just to bring in subpar replacement Brenda? I dont hate Brenda but I still don't buy her being a good match with Bob (she seems way too old and boring for him).

But I don't agree that her being a village gossip is a bad thing. I think every soap needs one of those characters. Yes they're supposed to be annoying, but they are realistic. Most small towns/communities have one (or more). And they are an important 'connector' between characters and stories that otherwise wouldn't have any practical way of being connected.
