It seems lot of people love this film and it was shown again tonight on Channel five. But is it worthy to be called a classic film

Cringey and fun, but not a classic.

Of course I would say it is.

At the very least it's a cultural classic. Any 30 year old film that still impacts modern culture deserved the label.

I always found the extensive anachronistic use of 80s music in a film set in the early 60s rather jarring.

That's the magic of cinema.

If people enjoy it that much then for them it's a classic.

Personally I think it's an OK film, but my wife absolutely loves it, and will watch it over and again.

That's the magic of cinema.
The main problem is they mix 60s and 80s music throughout, making the latter even more incongruous.

Sappy and soapy old twaddle for the undiscerning & 80s kitsch bores.

Let's just say I didn't have the time of my life.

Not my cup of tea, and never managed to watch it all the way through but yes I consider it a classic. It did what it set out to do, and did it very well - well enough for it to have a special place in many people's hearts.

I've never seen it. But it's become so iconic and mentioned so much I'd have to say it is.
And I say that after never having watched it or knowing if it is any good or not.

If it has entered the public consciousness as this film appears to have done, and has captured people's imaginations, then who am I to argue?

It was 'iconic' as far back as the early 90's.

I say that, as I remember it being on the telly on Christmas 1990, when I dated my (now ex husband).

We recreated (very badly) the lifting scene.

Everybody talked about it back then, particularly because of Patrick Swayze.

Loved it then love it now, despite the 'fact' it may seem 'kitsch'.

Dirty Harry - most certainly!

Dirty Dancing - not so much.

I always found the extensive anachronistic use of 80s music in a film set in the early 60s rather jarring.
The same could be said for the big screen adaptation of Grease - a movie set in the 50s with a somewhat disco/70s soundtrack.

Back on topic, no, I don't regard Dirty Dancing as a classic. A good movie of it's time, but certainly not a classic.

But then the film "Excalibur" features several pieces by Wagner an anachronism of more than a 1,000 years

I'm just wondering how many of those who're stating that it's "Not a Classic" are men

I think it's a great film, not the greatest but one of those films I will watch at least once a year

Of course it's a classic.
It doesn't matter whether individuals like it or not, that doesn't factor into it.

*raises gender-specific hand*

Listen, I acknowledge its low-rent status in 80s pop-culture and the inherent nostalgia that comes with it. With typical opportunism they've even wrung a stage musical out of it for God's sake. But it's the sort of alleged 'classic' that has little to do with the actual craft. It's more a reminder of P.T. Barnum's dictum that no-one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the general public.
