Why are Gay campaigners saying George Michael should have come out as Gay years ago
I heard on news today that Peter Satswell the well known Gay rights campaigner was saying that George Michael should have come out as Gay in the Eighties as it would have helped a lot of people with their sexuality. But he then says he knew it was tough to do that back then
Well im sorry but if George decided he was not ready at the time then it was his business. How come no one is having a go at Elton John not coming out at that time. He went to the extreme of getting married to hide his sexuality |

I thought he was bi? In any case it was not that clear-cut in Michael's case.
As the previous poster said, it is everyone's personal choice surely. No one should feel obliged to reveal anything about their personal life for the benefit of others unless they make a conscious decision to do so. |

Peter Tatchell is such a bore I don't think I've ever come across a gay man who is so defined by his sexuality, it's like there's no other aspect to him.

Tatchell is an awful man.
However, you could argue that if george had been comfortble about coming out without having to troll public convenients. The tabloids would not of hung him out to dry..... |

It is up to the individual when they come out or even if they come out. It is no-one else's business.
It is strange that people who happen to be gay often have to announce it when straight people never have to do that. I mean you don't pull your parents to one side and tell them you are straight, do you?. Maybe in the future we can be a little more open minded when it comes to people's sexuality at least I hope so. |

Peter tatchell is vile. As someone else said, you'd think that's the only aspect to his personality.
He's a promo-sexual. It's no one's business what your sexuality is. If you want to tell people fair enough, but if you don't that's up to you. I hate the phrase "closet case" as if you should be ashamed of not singing from the rooftops that you're gay. And I say all this as an out gay man. It was like perez hilton outing celebrities. It's none of your damn business, and it's also not interesting. |

It's up to him, not somebody else.
It was reasonably obvious to most that George Michael was gay right from the very start. I challenge anybody to watch their their first performance on TOTP for their first hit Young Guns and tell me that isn't about as gay as it gets. There was no reason for George to publicly announce he was gay any more than it would be for me to announce that I'm straight. He had his own mind and shouldn't feel that he has to cow tow to the demands of some political activists. He was gay, everyone fukcing knew it before they knew it, and when it was official that he was gay he probably became more popular than before. So in hindsight he probably made a sound decision to not feel it was something he should be compelled to publicly announce. People can moan about what George Michael did or didn't do. But I believe that the important thing is that he was a huge success in his own right for being a talented individual not because of his sexuality. Which people accepted anyway. He was an inspiration to people whether they are gay or not. People liked him for being him, not for what sexual identity he was. |

F**cking leave George alone now. All these parasites coming out and saying so many hurtful things.
They should stop and think how his family would feel at seeing the disgusting comments. Though, they're probably too dignified to comment. |

I think it's because they have this need to express an opinion on just about every news item going.

I don't understand why so many people on here hate PT.
This happens in all the threads that Peter Tatchell's name is mentioned. He is a great human rights activist and trying to do the right thing. |

Because they want to JUDGE him, without thinking about his background or the historical context.
Makes me angry, because it's bloody stupid and unkind. And at the end of the day, his bloody business. |

The obnoxious Tatchell has only one agenda - himself.
He and Diane Abbott should form a double-act because the universe would immediately form a micro-black hole to swiftly get rid of the ghastly event horizon of repulsiveness that would occur. |

Tatchell is awful, I think he's probably responsible for harming the progress of gay rights etc as most people are allergic to anything that has his name attached to it. Horrible man. |

This was also the era of Aids, which was often dubbed "the gay plague". Gay men were blamed for the deadly virus. Public attitudes became much more homophobic. Gay-bashings and murders rocketed. It was a fearful period to be gay, let alone a gay public figure. I wish George had come out then, as he could have helped counter that tide of prejudice. But I understand why he didn't.

Really?! You don't think they would have hit on some other area of his life to attack? You have a different opinion of them than I do.
