Not sure he's ever been clean. Even when supposedly off the booze and other drugs he seemed addicted to other things be. Smokes 100+ tags a day I think. Had a period exercising I read and he did that to excess as well. It's always seemed to me that he just swaps one addiction for another.

Throwing money around in a five star hotel. I wonder too where he gets his money from.

I used to throw mars bars at him when we went to White Hart Lane

chucking him down the stairs is going too far

You realise that none of that actually says he was a 'mate', don't you?

Sounds more someone he knew in passing, especially as he had not seen him for 18 months at the time of the interview.

That certainly does not scream 'mate' to me.

Like a lot of people you fall into the trap of believing he goes out looking for trouble and courts publicity...based largely on what you read in the notoriously unreliable and frankly extremely dubious press.

In years past it was usually only paparazzi that followed celebs around looking for something juicy they could make into a headline. And it was easily done, just a little provocation, a few sly insults to push them over the edge, taking endless photo's etc (witnessed it first hand many times).

Bottom line is, a photo of a person like Gazza posing and smiling nicely is not going to make the front page...but a photo of him throwing a punch, being drunk, aggressive etc is guaranteed to...hence its in the paparazzi's interest (especially financially) to engineer such pictures, and believe me they do.

In addition, the reason they take endless pics of celebrities is so they have just the right photo with the desired expression that suits whatever story is written about them. Fergie was one of the worst victims of this, stories always accompanied with her having a stupid grin or expression. So much so that most people believed she was kind of stupid.

But now with social media, the public can take photos and videos and upload them, and tweet endlessly...then you have the tail wagging the dog, as the media pick up on this and make a story about it. And as far as I can see something like 5 - 10 comments on twitter seems to qualify as a 'twitterstorm' or 'twitter going into meltdown' etc.

Gazza has some issues, that's clear. But like with him and many others who seem to suffer this sort of treatment from both the media and the public, frankly I believe very little of any of it.

A tremendous talent, self misused and ultimately chucked down the toilet pan.”

The thing is most alcoholics are not famous so whilst they do get up to similar things we just don't read about it. Whilst there are many functioning alcoholics / addicts there are many who are just like Gascoigne who when drunk cause havoc but as I say the papers are not interested as they are not famous.

And whist any addict can behave terribly when it comes to the media , twitter users and the famous you do have to take some of it with a pinch of salt.

Why doesn't he get a regular job? That would fill his days, give him something to do beside drinking, smoking and brawling,

He admitted at a later point that he didnt know Moat, he thought at the time that he knew him, he didnt, he was off his head.

And how will that work exactly? What sort of job would be do?

Be sensible...

Granted the guy is no saint and has his problems, but he will never be left alone no matter what he does or where he goes, and people like yourself will continue to believe that he goes out looking for attention, and also looking for trouble.

Like I said before, people will always hassle and provoke him looking for a reaction, and someone will always be there to film his reaction...and the media will write the usual nonsensical story of him going off his head...again...and people like you will lap it up and never question it.

One question I have the same with George Best when he was alive , why do the places continue to serve them , they know they are ill and usually already drunk so they shouldn't serve them. Mind you with George Best one pub in particular ( which shall remain nameless along with its profiteering boss) loved him going in , the manager boasted of him as a client and then used to tip off the tabloids.

I don't know why people feel sorry for this guy anymore. He has had so many chances to turn his life around and each time he has thrown it back in people's faces.

he used to drink in a pub in Chelsea, and when he died the pub went skint, he must have drunk an awful lot to support a small business

Thing is though, the overwhelming majority of people seem to make it through life without getting into any of the exchanges he gets involved in - unless you're saying they're all made up, that is?

Several pubs in Chelsea, our company owned one and we would not serve him any alcohol, one of the others was the one I was referring to.

He is an addict, some can come through with help , some sadly cannot but for those close it is so hard to walk away but sometimes you just have to ( for your good and sometimes the good of the addict) . I have seen addicts in action and it is so hard to deal with them as however much you try and help they have to meet you half way , many want to , many try their best but their mental makeup always gets the better of them ( addiction alters the brain even more ) , some are lucky and get through. The behaviour can be bad but often its the lies and deceit that gets to you the most.

He knew Moat had been a bouncer in Newcastle right at the time of the shootings, long before the media picked up on it. He knew him alright, even if he distanced himself later.

Being drunk simply made him act stupid by thinking he could help.

I guess you're referring to the pub off Oakley Street, Chelsea, it rhymes with bean.
Best was often in there, rumours abounded that he either owned, or part owned it.
No idea if they were true, I think not.

He looks like he's a hopeless addict. It will probably kill him. I went through it with a mate. All the help everyone tried to get him and all the relapses.. After years and years of hospitals, binges and bad behaviour then "recoveries" it finally killed him. I always thought drinking yourself to death would be a fast downward spiral, this wasn't.

The man is ill. He's a long term using alcoholic, which isn't his only addictive illness and he's bi-polar. A horrible combination for anyone to deal with.
Apart from his occasional paid appearances when he's able, what "regular" job can he do and when he's so well known?

This is something he is not in control of, obviously he is not well.
Just think of all the tax he's paid, not just on his salary when he was playing football, fags, booze. I would say he's given a lot to this country in many ways, including keeping extremely good journalists occupied.
