Britain will get a Brexit trade deal that 'satisfies no-one but with which everyone can live'

http://uk.businessinsider.com/brexit...k-like-2016-12

LONDON — Theresa May's government will struggle to negotiate a satisfactory trade deal with the European Union once Brexit is officially completed.

That's according to trade expert Angus Armstrong, who has contributed a chapter to a new report on Brexit produced by The UK in a Changing Europe and Political Studies Association.
Ultimately, Armstrong writes, neither the UK nor the EU will come out of negotiations satisfied with the deal — but will sign due to the importance of future UK-EU trade relations.

"Despite the fixation of the UK press on the triggering of Article 50, the key moment in the next six months will not be this but the EU response to it. The likely scenario is one of familiar EU negotiating territory: long interludes of tedium and small print, interspersed with episodes of late-night brinkmanship, leading eventually to a compromise that satisfies no-one but with which everyone can live. However, if the continental consensus is that the UK is still living on Fantasy Island, we could be heading for a showdown sooner than anyone expects."

Well ... Feelings have been mixed about our being in the EU for decades. So it'll be hardly surprising if they'll be mixed when we're out.

I do!

Depends if the politicians in Europe are sensible or simply act like sulky teenagers.

Yet another expert who actually has no more idea than anyone else what the deal might be. Maybe he should ask the IMF they have a good track record on predictions!

There will be a deal. The EU cannot afford for one not to be done. The U.K. will be the biggest market for EU exports in the world once we leave.

How many times are we going to hear from 'insiders' and 'secret sources' ?? I'm sick of it. No one gives a stuff what they think. The Brexit negotiations haven't started and until they do, random people are trying to muddle the water.

The only views that matter are that of the UK Government and the EU leaders. Whatever anyone else says is crap If. People are just jumping on articles like this because the 2 negotiating sides haven't started talking and they just want to hear anything, even if it's lies.

It's amazing how, in the eyes of Brexiteers, everything comes down to the fault of the EU. We are the ones who have decided to leave and we have no right to expect any favours.

They seem far more professional than the clueless idiots we have on this side of the channel...

And again, it is not all about economics. It is also about the survival of the EU. The assumption that the EU27 will view Brexit as nothing but a financial transaction is wrong.

The EU's main priority will be to maintain its existence. And so far, the EU27 are fairly united on that.
Oh please. Do you think German BMW will accept the loss of its 3rd biggest market?

If we have tariffs imposed on car imports then BMW will lose sales in the UK as the price of the cars rises. However they will likely increase sales in the rest of the EU as the cars we make such as Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Jaguars will increase in price in the EU when they impose tariffs.

Now remind me again who owns Jaguar Land Rover?
