Our ex HR got in touch and basically said the same as everyone here, too complicated, send it over to the financial controller

The Financial Controller is an HR expert? Sounds like a very poor suggestion.

I took that to mean in terms of project sponsor.

Tbh I don't proper HR would be able to deal with it without talking to the firm's lawyer and probably accountant too. We get asked about company cars regularly by our clients. Often terms of tax there is no right answer as such.

From the money side of things he knows more than anyone so not that bad a suggestion.

I was thinking the same thing. It sounds as though one of the main considerations is contractual entitlements, and I think I'd want a proper legal opinion on that.
