Sharp acquires control of its European TV manufacturer
On 1 January 2015, UMC of Slovakia took over the Sharp licence in Europe together with Sharp's factory in Poland.
Following its acquisition by Foxconn in August 2016, Sharp is reversing its licensing policy. It has now agreed to buy a 56.7% stake in UMC. This comes on top of an agreement in September to supply TV panels to UMC. It still licences its brand in Europe to Vestel for White Goods and in the USA to Hisense. Hisense declined to hand back the Sharp brand licence. |

Crickey did Sharp suddenly realise that letting a bottom of the range manufacturer use its name on their products might somehow backfire when people found out they'd bought some budget junk rather than a Japanese product?
![]() Most Sharp TV's had been Vestel for many years, and the ones that weren't were never very good. |

Sharp is one of the TV makes that have went right downhill over the last 5 to 10 years.
My sister had a Sharp years ago cost just under £400 at the time, TV looked good when she first got it but turned out to be crap. I now tend to not recommend anything that I know maybe made by the likes of Vestel. Darren |
