In some cases it is to the left - i.e. communist societies. However, in the West this isn't generally the case.

Countries have veered to the left in the past - when the left cared about the interests of ordinary working people rather than identify politics and the views of the elitist liberal middle classes in London, New York, Paris and San Francisco.

Well, that's not the left then, is it?

What major examples in the West can you point to of veering to the left?

Greece in 2015 would be an obvious one with the far left Syriza coming to power.

The right is where people run to when they get scared of imaginary monsters.

The five star movement in Italy aswell.

That is largely because Italy is made up of right wing parties though

I imagine the left that you grew up with and the left that I grew up with are far different beasts.

Depends on the country and its political organisation. In this country only one in twenty men had a vote when they went off in 1914 to WWI and women had to wait even longer for a vote.

Unfortunately I have never lived in a left wing UK - and I'm in my 60s and have always lived here.

Human societies tend to the left the world over and throughout history.

It takes a concerted effort from a powerful elite to frustrate this.

I think you are just being a bit fickle neither of us lived under a truly left or right wing government.

What were the left of your youth campaigning for,?

It quite simple, capitalism won out, which led to greed and people wanting to keep more of their money. The right allows for retaining of one's wealth, more than spreading it to the fellow people, in a left society. They all believe that by doing so, people are more likely to be wealthy, however in reality it's only if you are successful.

People assume China is communist, but they aren't for quite some time, since the 1980's. China had massive socialist reforms in the 80's. They've kept some state owned entities, however the money is only going to the people in power, they aren't spreading it to the people. If you look into China, you'd find that people are only thinking about being wealthy, and has changed the Chinese in a bad way.

Seems to be seen so nowadays. They'd describe themselves as left.
I'd describe myself as just left of centre if I had to put myself on the political spectrum. But nowadays I'm apparently right wing or far right according to some of these leftist nutcases. They've hijacked the left and appropriated it to serve their own ends.

So I'd suggest that we haven't really veered to the right. We've veered more to the left so everything to the right of what is todays left appears to be more to the right than it really is.
I don't know if I've explained that very well. To put it another way I'd say that the entire political spectrum has shifted to the left so that everything seems to be more to the right than it may have done before.

England has had middle of the road governments for my whole life.

The Tory's have just been a bit better at delivering them than labour.

People and nations tend to veer to the left as they and their nations grow more prosperous. They vere to the right when they realize the state is growing too large to maintain and is making everyone poorer.

Revolutions usually occur when people and nations are in desperate economic straits. The American revolution was a notable exception.

I think you can chalk up the growth of European and North American socialism to increasing wealth during the twentieth century.

All things being equal, people believe they are better judges of what to spend money on than the government. It has to be a government that people REALLY believe in for people to vote to be taxed more. At times when politicians on all sides are figures of contempt, people will go for the ones who will tax them the least.

Because every time someone mentions veering to the left you get the endless argument from the left, about why half of them are not left and what left really means and how left is enough left

That and the fact that the greed of the many seems harder to tolerate than the greed of the few

When the left push to the left the right push to the right.

Because people are naturally more inclined towards vices like selfishness and greed.
And then those with wealth end up in positions of power and influence (eg own newspapers and vast media consortia) and perpetuate their doctrine.

When you think of my parents' generation eg my mum who was born in a rented hovel, and through left-wing policies then got put (with her family) in a council house with electricity and hot water, got free healthcare, free schooling, free secondary education, free college education, free school meals etc, you can see how much society has now changed and lurched to the right.
If mum were born now she'd probably be living in a one-roomed flat with her whole family, and would be relying on foodbanks for meals.

I think currently most of Europe has leftist Governments. Greece, Italy, France, Romania, Sweden, Denmark, Scotland, Portugal, Slovakia, Latvia, Czech Republic etc are all varying degrees of leftists ruling the roost. Countries like Hungary are fairly rare, hence main stream media's fascination with Orban.

I suspect because the right control the media and can present their own version of the truth. It's always been that way and is getting worse. Orwell was correct after all.

It unfortunately takes a lot less time and effort to burn something down than it does to built something. When angry people are looking for simple solutions they are going to prefer arson.

People are naturally selfish and parochial, so any push to the left is going to be uphill.
