Hey everyone,

So tonight I had a washing machine flood - about an inch of water in areas in my kitchen. Not the most fun thing in the world! I noticed within about 2 minutes of it happening, and had the whole lot soaked up within about half an hour (thank goodness for jumbo paper towels and spare bedding!)

What I was wondering is, should I give my downstairs neighbour a heads up? I don't think there was enough time - or volume, as it didn't even cover the full of my kitchen floor - for it to have dripped down to them. I've stuffed paper towels down any obvious gaps and they're coming out bone dry.

I know the nice thing to do would be to pop down and just let them know, but I work in the insurance industry and it's made me cynical. I don't want them to turn around and say there's damage when it's not actually been anything to do with my machine and then say I'm negligent if I'm not.

This is the first time something like this has happened, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ta muchly!

Speaking from experience - Any damage would have to be claimed on his own insurance. If he claims you've been negligent that would have to be backed up.

You're aware of the flood so the sensible thing would be to let him know.

If they were going to notice they would probably have done so already! I don't think water could have got an inch deep if it were running down stairs. I have a leaky conservatory roof, and even in the heaviest rain the water never collects in puddles on the floor, since it runs off to the the outside.

It would only be good manners to tell downstairs. Better to be warned and prepared - e.g. for water seeping into his electrics, weakening the ceiling, etc.

My neighbour has done this 3 times now & still comes in pissed out her tits! Thinking her dog is still alive. if your neighbour is like her don't tell them & if not tell them.
