How does Film4 work?
How does it show more recent films free to air when most companies have deals with Sky to have films behind a paywall? How does it work?

It simply has deals with the companies that don't have deals with Sky or streaming sites to put films behind a paywall and in many cases the newer films they show are part-funded by Film4.

Bit of a generalisation but Sky is more interested in the big blockbusters, leaving a lot of Indies and more niche films available for other broadcasters, including Film4. Some are part financed by Film4 too, so they'll automatically get their TV premiere on Film4.

What Film4 financed films have had their premiere on Film4 (without being on a subscription channel first)? |

i suspect they get funding to make films too ( plus some of them go on to make a massive profit) so having a channel to show them helps them keep more of the profit and other films are a bit of a loss leader? They do have some recentish films on there from time to time and i can't see how they can make them pay as i doubt many are watching

Not counting Sky Store, which obviously costs extra, one very recent film that premiered on Film Four & has not been on Sky Cinema is Mr Turner. In fact, I think it has only been shown once so far as I am looking for a repeat to record it as missed it first time around.

It works excellently in my view, and I am contradicting a critical post I made about a year ago about Film 4 and am happy to admit it.
None of the big American franchise movies are on it for a few years, no loss. But loads of indie stuff and some great foreign dramas too: Safety Not Guaranteed, American Mary to name just two recently. |

Will it ever be in hd and on freeview? I now only watch / record channels 1-7 (all hd in my custom arranged epg on my Samsung smart Tv) hd is normal, sd is just depressing
Does having a hd variant increase the cost of film rights? Maybe that's a reasonable n why it's not in hd on freeview along with some probable deal with sky |

There's nothing 'special' about Film 4... they're just a normal terrestrial channel so will in the main, show films that are in the terrestrial tv window.
A lot of their recent films are things which have already been through the pay tv windows (Sky, Amazon, Netflix). Channel 4 usually retain most TV rights to their own films (I think) so it's not unusual to see them a year or so after cinema release or sometimes after a pay tv window (recent examples being 12 Years A Slave, Inbetweeners 2 and Frank) . There are also some film4 flicks like The Double and Under The Skin that premiered on tv when they were still on Amazon Prime. And then sometimes like any other film channel/service, they may pick up tv rights to other things that may not have been acquired by any other channel/service. |

Unless you have a badly made TV or STB that won't upscale SD very well, I hear some UHD (4K) sets suffer in this way, I, personally, prefer watching a good movie in SD to a bad one in HD. |

There is a very good looking Italian crime drama on Film 4 this weekend, look out for it.

If a film (or any programme) is going to be shown in HD then I don't mind waiting a bit for that than watch it in SD now.

To me HD is important, so I hardly ever watch Film 4. I assume Sky pays it money to keep the HD version exclusively on Sky?

C4 are like ITV taking pay TV money for the HD versions of their secondary channels. When the COM7 HD multiplex launched on Freeview C4 agreed to include HD channels but rather than put on a decent channel like E4 or Film4 they made Freeview HD exclusives of C4+1 and 4Seven. That shows how uninterested C4 are with HD on Freeview. |

If Film4 makes films and provide financial support, it's logical that they make money out of it. If they make money, they can invest some to acquire good film titles.

But how can big recent films like Rio, Transformers, Battleship, Iron Man 2 be on Film4? How do they get big recent blockbuster movies like these? Should the rights not be with Sky?

Sky don't have the rights forever, eventually they can go to other channels/services. |
