It wont help that the top diplomat to the EU has just resigned - no doubt due to differences with how Brexit will be pursued.

This is how I see it:

The government is obviously hoping that the EU will negotiate over the next couple of years and come up with a single market-lite solution that is politically acceptable to the Tory leadership. I highly doubt that anyone (even David Davis) is that bothered how quickly we fully exit as long as the government can sell it to the public before the 2020 election.

However, I personally believe that that the above is not going to happen. I just don't see the EU agreeing to any bespoke agreement for the UK in the two year time period - they have no motivation to speed up the process and hence I can see it taking the full 10 years and the UK being offered either EEA membership or nothing at all in the meantime. So the UK will face a choice - does it fully leave the EU with no deal in 2019 (which is technically possible but messy and risky), or does it remain in the EEA until a final deal can be agreed (which the vast majority in parliament would be happy with but the public/media/Tory right will go ballistic).

What angers me is that it appears he was pushed for being "pessimistic" (which I assume is a civil service euphemism for telling the politicians that they have no effing clue).

We literally have arrogant Brexiters in the corridors of power, who think that their feelings and opinion are worth more (and are more "correct") than compared to an expert.

I can handle Brexiters being woefully un-informed, but not our politicians.

And the gross ineptitude of this government continues.

"Woefully uninformed" translating to "not of the same opinion".

"woefully uninformed" means "woefully uninformed", to steal an idiom from our great prime minister.

Our politicians seem about as educated on international trade deals as the man in the street or Barry down the pub, who still thinks the EU banned bendy bananas.

Yes, I can see why you would want to hand over negotiating trade deals to technocrats who are essentially unhindered by the democratic process.

That's totally absurd, it's Chris that's always going on about the bendy banana ban, it's the curvy cucumber crackdown that Barry always goes on about.
