You really thought that of her, a friend's wife??
You would too, given her constant stupid posts 10 times a day about it. She treated the whole thing like rival football supporters goading each other, even changed her profile picture after the vote to that baby pointing and laughing at another baby meme with the caption "lets all laugh at remainers" *facepalm*

A friend's wife honestly thought the referendum was going to give billions to the NHS and she's no longer have to wait at the doctors because all the sick foreigners would be gone. (I guess she thought all the foreign doctors and nurses would stay). Unsurprisingly she's been remarkably quiet about the whole thing since it became clear that none of that was happening. I honestly think she thought a load of prison busses would be driving around on the morning of the vote, lassoing foreigners and driving them to the nearest airport.
England is over 83% Indigenous British/white, how many foreign people does your friend's wife think are here?

It might enlighten her to check out this link which will show the % of ethnic background in your and everyones area taken from the 2011 census. Maybe she'll think all the foreigners have come here since then though?

There does seem to be a high proportion of Brexiteers who link to Britain First or similar organisations in their Facebook posts.
How high is this proportion? What do their Facebook habits tell us about society as a whole?

When you try making a point by using Facebook as a measure, it's easier just to give up and find something a lot more substantial.

I know quite a few Brexiters. One told me that hundreds of people he knew, who never vote in general elections, were turning out this time to vote as they wanted rid of immigrants, who they blame for long waits at the local hospital or GP appointments. He lives near me. There are hardly any EU immigrants here, but quite a few Commonwealth-origin people, although the vast majority is white working class or self employed tradesmen. I tried to explain that the GPs now only sees patients 3 days a week and the local hospital is PFI'd and understaffed (many locum immigrant doctors and nurses too) due to cutbacks and bad UK govt decisions, but he wouldn't listen. Immigrant means immigrant.

Others I know have opined that "I f**king hate Germans, they make all our laws" - when argued with he maintained his dislike of all foreigners, said the English were superior and even if what I said was true, it was what he felt that was important. He is a pensioner with a full pension and a house worth an estimated £1m so hardly poor or left behind.
He also said "we can't have muslims in the EU!".

Another guy went on about how muslims and blacks were 'animals'.

Others expressed a conflation of all immigrants of whatever origin, one had lost a single job to a Latvian painter so was aggrieved (this is a guy who turns down work as he's so busy) and all without exception expressed xenophobic and Islamophobic views.
These were all felt but weren't expressed before the referendum, which has made toxicity mainstream.
The Remain problem is how to appeal to emotion, not just intellect, and how to make people accept facts rather than perception of reality. Nasty people shout louder and right now, only their views are being heard.
So one person mouthed off that he knew hundreds of people who wanted rid of immigrants. Guess what? He was mouthing off!

I was aware of the first 2 facts already. As for the rest of what you wrote, it backs up my stance that the population with immigration is generally balanced when you take out the amount of people who die each year, along with the fact that babies won't add or take from society much until they reach adulthood and with the older generations retiring in massive numbers we need immigrants! Also you overlooked how most of the people counted as immigrants are here on 5 year visas or less!
The UK population grew by 4.6 million between 2004 and 2014. FOUR POINT SIX MILLION!

You can wrap up the immigration debate in any bow you like, do not try to claim that an increase of that magnitude is anything other than huge swathes of people entering this country. Are you really suggesting that >300k coming in EVERY YEAR is sustainable? Really?

How about quoting from an independent source instead of a hard-left political newspaper? The Guardian will print ANYTHING that belittles the concerns that millions have over immigration. That's why remain lost.

Oh so now they are making things up too?! They took the data from the census which probably came from the independent or at least I hope independent ONS! Your post shows how much in denialness there is out there!

Err did it really? Most of the people that come here are NOT permanent immigrants but are here on 5 year or less visas! Stop getting yourself so whipped up and look properly at things before going off on one. Even if they were 4.6 Million permanent new people, so what? We need new people to do the jobs of the Millions of older people retiring andn they older generations are the BIGGEST alive today and will be retiring well into the 2030's. Unless we print money we can't do without immigrants and their contributions!

This idea that people are being 'driven' or 'forced' to exercise their vote in one way or another is ludicrous. Like the people who voted for Trump blaming the people who didn't for 'making' them. What utter, utter BS. People vote how they vote because something in that vote speaks to something in them. I've yet to hear a coherent argument for why Britain is better out of the EU than in that doesn't touch on 'borders'.

@bluewomble,

Looks like you missed this post of mine from earlier....

Nope, wrong, we don't have to build a city the size of birmingham every 5 years. First of all if we needed cities being built, how come none have been since Milton Keynes in the 1960's/70's?

B, most of the migrants coming in are on 5 year visas or less and those that come here on spousal visas will live with their British spouse. Those that are here on 5 year visas or less like students, temporary workers will rent not buy in most cases too.

Then there is the best part of 500 thousand people who die each year in the UK too and while the birth rate is higher, it will take 20 years before they start adding or taking from society in massive ways.

With the older generations being the biggest in numbers and retiring in massive numbers too, I think we actually need a lot of immigration and yes those coming here to work or study should be controlled, but no way should there be the kind of distortions there have been for the last 20 years (by the Farage's/Andrew Green/Migration Watch of this world) on the immigration figures. That has led to the Theresa May's of this world vindictively keeping married couples apart (those married to non EU citizens that is and whats worse is that Theresa may knows the real score but it suits her and her ideology to let people think things are a lot worse than they are!)

5% of the population are out of work, how about we worry about getting them in work and training/educating them rather than out sourcing. Not to mention the refugees claiming theyre kids, or seeking asylum from turkey for instance, i mean what are they running frm there?? kebabs and sunshine?? plus the gov did report on people from other countries in clud outside europe coming her for "health care tourism", but i suppose you think thats all bollocks too and we shld just let every one in.

That is why my friends and people my age voted out, no doubt and idc what anyone says about it . We want to have opportunities given to us, we want to keep the nhs from going under we want to have kids, get married and live happily ever after in a place that isnt dictated too from outside the uk by people who seem to hate us, like i said, we want stronger immigration controls like those in australia. Its a fake thing that all the old people voted out, us younger ones did.

Why would you think that? There is strength in unity and peace in unity. That has been proven since the foundation of the EEC. You are as likely to be 'dictated to' from Whitehall as from Brussels. Why don't you trust your own government to manage its own immigration within the EU? And where do you want the refugees that several crises are creating to go? Do you think the UK has no responsibility in this?

Also, how do you feel about the prospect of EU HQs for international companies moving elsewhere simply because it will make their operations easier to be within the community; not because they or anyone else 'hates' the UK? And how do you feel about UK citizens - hundreds of thousands of them - who have made their lives elsewhere in the UK and are now completely uncertain of THEIR rights in relation to healthcare and movement etc.?

Between 4% and 6% unemployment is statistically considered full employment. If it goes much below that its potentially damaging as it leads to accelerated inflation. There are always going to be a certain percentage unemployed for various health-related; skills-related and sociological reasons. An unemployment rate of 5% is no argument for or against anything.

have u?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...orn-Syria.html

Four out of five migrants are NOT from Syria: EU figures expose the 'lie' that the majority of refugees are fleeing war zone
The figures from Eurostat, the EU's official statistical agency, show that migration from April to June was running at double the level of the same period in 2014.
The number of Afghans lodging asylum claims is up four-fold, from 6,300 to 27,000. Another 17,700 claims were made by Albanians, whose country is at peace.
FOUR OUT OF FIVE, perhaps you should stop attacking people on here insinutating theyre stupid and racist and read the news yourself, otherwise you'll end up looking like you're on the wind up yourself.

I suggest you go and familiarise yourself with the effects of wage compression and then have a serious rethink. No one said we can do without immigrants - I welcome skilled doctors, scientists, academics, teachers etc who want to come here and better this country. I do NOT welcome the riff-raff who have criminal convictions, no job/prospects, and/or no skills - what good are they to anyone? What use is a growing congregation of undesirables whose only reason for existence seems to be to take whatever they can whilst not caring a jot for who they hurt along the way? What contributions are they making?

The Daily Mail is hate mongering clickbait written by illiterate mouth foamers.

Having said that the article does cite Cameron as willing to accept 20,000 refugees. Meanwhile, Jordan are taking 2.7m; Turkey 2.5m, Pakistan 1.6m and Lebanon 1.5m.

The wars that rage in the middle east are geopolitically complex but the Western nations most fearful of these dreaded refugees tend also to be the ones with the greatest weapons related wealth.

Oh the anti everything DM will be neutral will they? If you think people from any war zone country are fleeing perfectly fine countries, go and swap places with them and see how you like living in such places!

So all the millions of older people who have been officially retiring since 2011 and will be well into the 2030's and will cost us loads in NHS/Care costs are all doctors and skilled people are they? None of them will be retiring from lower paid jobs?!

I didnt claim they were neutral and i specifically said those NOT IN WAR ZONES
your style of "debate" and by debate i mean attempting to shout everyone down, seems to be just to attack anyone who disagrees with you at put words in their mouths they've not said

you shld stop it, its pissing people off, either react to what people have ACTUALLY SAID or dont bother.

First of all I'll say what i like within DS rules. On that, you should remind yourself of the rules about treating other people with respect on here. if other posters can't handle my views then tough.

The people in Calais are from various war zones too and where they are not, those places are often very unstable/unsafe so again, if you think they are fleeing such stable safe places, go and swap places with them and see how you like it. I'd much rather have refugees here than those intolerant of them!

Since when did we move away from training our own people for these jobs and start bringing them in by the hundreds of thousands from everywhere else? Oh yes, when it was discovered they'd do it much cheaper because their living standards are much lower. Again, go look up wage compression.

You have conveniently totally ignored the point that the population has risen by 4.6m in ten years, which has placed a huge strain on all aspects of our lives - GP/hospital access, wages, school places, overcrowding, the transformation of certain parts of our cities into ghettos, on and on it goes...

I want decent people to come here from a decent stock with the skills we need. I also want our ageing population cared for and our own vulnerable people looked after FIRST. I want any migrant that has committed a serious crime in another country to be held and then deported within 48 hours, no questions asked. I want any migrant that acts against the Christian foundations of this country by encouraging violent against against it put in prison for life. I want fairness for all law-abiding citizens, wherever they're from, and a closed door at our borders so we can lower the population numbers, apart from medical personnel, scientists, and degree-educated teachers. We can't keep taking in millions of people from Syria, Afghanistan, Africa, Poland, Canada, Australia, Brazil - it doesn't matter where they're from, it's the NUMBERS that is out of control, especially of low skilled people that offer nothing.

Apparently this makes me a racist xenophobe!

Blame companies for not training people not migrants or minorities. Blame the Government for allowing the minimum wage/"living wage" for being too low and allowing the housing crisis by selling off council houses and not replacing them!

Wrong I responded to that twice, go back and check.

I doubt you will get those things. 48 deportations? People locked up for life if they encourage violence against christian values? That's not going to happen but what do you mean by encouragement and what about acts of violence? Common assaults would be life in prison if you had your way? You say you welcome skilled migrants but want a closed door at the borders at the same time?!
