I'm surprised that Mike Read as a prominent UKIPer is allowed on the BBC - what with them being known for their left-wing bias.

Just watched the second part of this on bbc4. Missed the first part. An enjoyable half hour. Got all the music rounds right (well except the final Abba question, bleugh) pity no one around to witness my pointless knowledge

Not impressed by tonight's edition and a horrendous mistake in one of the rounds where the team had to guess the year and name the three hits played. They played Elton John's Nikita, Smiths with Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now and I Feel For You by Chaka Khan. The year was named as 1984, except the Elton John single actually came from 1985 and wasn't even released until October that year.

Such a basic error on a show of this kind is simply not good enough.

"Name Phil Collins' first solo album"
"No Jacket Required"?
"No, goes over to the other team"
"No Jacket Required"?

Well spotted!
Still enjoyable, but that was a basic mistake, that should not have slipped through.

Even so I hope they make some more episodes soon.

The show itself was great and most of the people on it are ageing remarkably well, including Mike.

The error was glaring however. As soon as Elton began playing I knew it must be 1985 but then the Smiths came along which confused me momentarily as I knew it from summer '84, and then when Chaka Khan came last with her November 1984 No1 hit I knew there had been a mistake. It does make you wonder about the "quality control" and how such errors get through. Not even any of the panellists appeared to notice. Infact I thought the six players tonight seemed quite unsure of some rather basic and obvious questions, such as those intro's.

I agree though, more please!

I totally agree, I knew Nikita was a hit in 85 & loads of other people will have noticed, very amateurish.

It's been brought to Mike's attention on twitter as we speak;

How can you fail NOT to be impressed with the vision that is Ms. Aston young Riccardo? I did think 'oh, you daft bat' when she repeated the wrong answer though!

I've enjoyed these couple of shows immensely, even though I did find myself shouting the answers at the telly a couple of times (the contestants don't take any notice strangely enough). We haven't really grasped the concept of TV as a passive activity in our house in the middle of our street!

Schoolboy error from the Readster for the wrong Year but great fun nonetheless & like Jedikiah I'd like to see it back for a series with a slightly wider scope of Years to make it more interesting with trickier questions, a bit like a TV version of Ken Bruce's Popmaster.

I'm sure they bought this back on Vintage TV a few years ago? It may have just been a one off.

I spotted the Nikita wrong year error as well as it featured on a 1985 compilation album that I had. Although I thought maybe it was released in Dec 84 and didn't chart until Jan 85 but as has been pointed out on here and on that tweet to Mike Read it was released in Oct 85 so absolutely no excuses there.

That sort of error is a mild irritation of mine. It also annoys me at the moment there is a Ministry Of Sound 90s dance compilation that is currently being advertised and two songs that feature on the ad stick out for me that shouldn't be on there: Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam & Black Box - Ride On Time. Both released in 1989. In fact Ride On Time was the biggest selling single of 1989.

Considering they were 80s pop stars I thought their knowledge of the 80s was dire. How can Nick Heyward not know D.I.S.C.O.
Cheryl Baker didn't know Mad World. She thought it was Sad World or whatever. I still enjoyed it over all

It was alright, but I much preferred the contestants on the first show to those on last night.

Also, David Grant's team basically cheated all the way through! You could see that Jay Aston was slightly miffed about it, too. I know it's just a bit of fun, but..............

Yeah, it's almost as if the Daily Mail makes it all up.

Terrible mistake with "Nikita'', but an enjoyabe show overall. It is always surprising, though, how little the stars of the day really know about pop. I am pretty sure many of us watching would have been far more knowledgable. I suppose at the time they would have been too busy with their own careers to take note of what was going on around them. Noone as bad as Andy last week from OMD, who i don't recall getting one question right!

It's Cheryl all the way for me Andyrew. Always reassuring to see Mrs Rita Crudgington looking so good still, as did Jay of course. They're both weathering very well indeed. They must have been kept well out of the wind and rain these past few years, like everyone in that studio infact.

I rather enjoyed them.
New year new Billy Value is it? An un-jesting comment! Deep shock at the above.

Pet hate of mine. Just before Christmas somebody called me "particular" to my very face. I wasn't sure whether it was being used as a positive or a negative if I'm honest. Certainly I see nothing wrong with being particular with attention to detail and a wish to obtain accuracy. With the things above that you describe there are no excuses and research is easy. I share your irritation fully.

The question's were not hard. Certainly they shouldn't have been for pop people who were frequent TOTP visitors in the 80's. The intro's round really amazed me for the sheer apparent ignorance. Those intro's were instantly recognisable from very big hit records. As you say, Ottawan's D.I.S.C.O, plus the very memorable Human League Love Action intro, so unique yet not easily got. Even Yazoo's Nobody's Diary was an instant for me. I came away wondering if all these pop people literally lived and still do in their own little 1980's bubbles in order to be so clueless on some pretty basic pop knowledge. Nothing was obscure after all.

Apart from the song by The Specials that I did not recognise, I had a 100% record in the intros round. The panelists probably lead busy lives - not like sad gits like me who have encyclopedic knowledge of 1980s pop music.

I wonder why Ranking Roger has never been a guest on the Jonathan Woss show?

You might be amazed to learn that politics doesn't have to impinge on everything. How's the Daily Mail this morning?

2nd show was just as good as the first one. OK there was a mistake with the Elton John song but so what? It was all good mild-anarchic fun.

Long may it continue (hopefully).
