I don't use the Sainsbury's at holiday times at all now - I was stuck in the car park trying to get out a few years ago at Christmas time (several days before Christmas!) and was there for over an hour in non-moving traffic trying to exit. The exit goes onto a very busy junction and nobody could get onto it to let people out of the car park as it was rush hour!

Well, I try not to use Sainsbury's at all to be honest - their prices are terrible, but I do pop in for a milk occasionally or to go to the market.
I don't understand how the computer thing works for either my example or yours! You could drive around for twenty minutes not find anywhere to park then queue for over and hour to get out and get a parking fine without ever turning the engine off.

I know, it's a flawed system. Ridiculous, but it makes them money. Look at the recent figures out for parking income at hospitals and how many millions they make, same goes for parking at supermarkets - income for parking firms and presumably supermarket gets a cut.

Completely ridiculous - you would think they would want to give the customer browsing time, spend more money, not in and out wham bam thank you ma'am!

Why do you choose to call it "Lidls" instead of "Lidl"?

I've noticed that many people of, shall we say, sub-prime intelligence often add an extra "s" to the names of retail outlets...

For example

Tescos - Tesco
Asdas - Asda
Lidls - Lidl
Aldis - Aldi

You never hear well educated people saying that they are "popping along to Waitroses"
"The" Asda

Quite a few snobs on here and in real life are quite boastful about how they have never demeaned themselves to shop at Lidls. It's Supermarket of the Year from The Good Housekeeping Int, you know those people who rate your M&S/Sainsurys/Waitrose products you spend a fortune on. It's also this year alone won catagories in

Bacon
Butter
Coffee
Chocolate
Cheese
Cooking sauces
Crackers
Smoked Salmon
Fruit Juice,
Muesli
and on and on beating out the main brands including those mentioned above.. the list is here for those who doubt it:

https://www.thegrocerownlabel.co.uk/2016-winners/

So I'll continue shopping there happily knowing I'm not likely to bump into any snobs.

bib - I agree with you on that one! I don't see how clever it is to pay so much more in Waitrose for things you can get for less elsewhere
I am very clever and shop in Lidl and other supermarkets . I do a shop in Lidl for anything I like and is cheaper . Then a quick shop elsewhere for brands I like not available in Lidl .

I have found the best self service machines are in Lidl. I don't think I have ever needed assistance using one. They just work.

As for parking, I find the worst is my local Sainsbury's. 90 minutes are free - which is fine I never take that long. But if it's a match day you must purchase a ticket. They never have signs to say there's a football match going on. How the heck are we supposed to know it's a match day! Twice I have received a ticket - to their credit though, twice customer services have overturned it upon presentation of my shopping receipt.

I'll try new things at Lidls that I've read have won awards, giving them a go. I have a bunch of items I've brought from there for a while now, certain german hams, french cheeses and their anti-pasti selection is amazing. Other stuff I know and love I'll get from Tesco or if working near and M&S I'll pop in there for their Walnut loaf and teabags.

I like that Lidl do massive tubs of greek yoghurt I pop in once in a while to stock up the freezer with chicken and things like that, but my weekly shop is mostly done at Asda for the convenience of everything I need being in one place. Things like wholegrain pasta (even though I still have to go to Sainsbury's for the lasagne sheets!). Shopping around - I think we all do a bit of that.

ETA: I've started buying some groceries in bulk from Amazon as it's so convenient to have 3 months supply of some things that are hard to find, like Tetley Extra Strong tea bags. Works out cheaper too.

Brand, spanking new Lidl opened near me in late December. They completely rebuilt over the previous one and got planning permission to extend their size with a large car park to boot. Used to be a bit of a snob about Lidl because their stock was limited but love it, now. Was fed up when our local one closed for rebuilding but it was worth the wait for the new one as their product range has increased and the older one was starting to look a bit grotty. The smell of bread/ baking (strategically placed near the entrance, of course) is heavenly and I love the range of bakery products. The tills are a bit squishy, though and one of the staff was telling me (a time ago) that they're not always treated very well in terms of pressure to perform, which confirms what others have said.

How on earth is it possible to spend 90 minutes on a single shop in Lidl? Surely, you would need to be pushing a convoy of ten trolleys to take anywhere near as much time as that?
Some people take ages to shop, unpack, pack and remember their pin. Some pay in coins and take centuries getting the collected cash out.

In a shop like Lidl, some browse at unfamiliar brands, look at different foods available, read content labels, think about what new items they may wish to purchase

I love Lidl's coffee and even prefer it to Nescafe. Their potato salad looks like sliced wax candles in snot, though, and tastes like it might be.

Thought someone would make a silly remark like that!
Our new Lidls has as big a car park as the Sainsburys next door,
There is no reason why Lidls staff should be pressured to move customers along faster, nether should they have to work harder than staff in other supermarkets, or work unpaid hours
They have bugger all staff & the ones they do have to do EVERYTHING

That's why they're cheap(er)

None of the supermarkuet's pack your shopping though, no matter where you go. I once asked the cashier (in Saintsbury's) if they could help me put things into bags to speed things up for the others waiting. I had a lot of back and arm / wrist pain after a fall and couldn't move quickly. The look on her face was priceless, you would think I'd just kicked her dog!
Rubbish. My mum always at least gets the offer of her shopping being packed for her, and I don't always, but mostly do at Sainsbury's if anywhere.

I find Lidl good for "European" or deli-style product like ham, sausages, cheese, breads etc but have also heard some nasty stories about things in their tinned products etc which makes me a little wary. I probably would use it more often if there were one closer to me. Don't enjoy being rushed through the checkout and having to pack at the other end but I've never been to a branch that had self-service, it would help ...

I went in Lidl today and the veg was awful - never seen it like this, probably been sitting there since Christmas.

Why do people not understand the concept of Lidl and Aldi ? You get cheap food and cut price items BECAUSE they can cut back on staff . You cant have your cake and eat it .Either you go elsewhere and pay more for your shopping and have it packed for you and a free car park .Or you go to Lidl and get cheaper shopping and do the work yourself .Its not rocket science to figure this out .You have a choice where you go and if you choose to want cheaper items then you suck it up and pack your own shopping from the filled trolly over by the counter . Simple

You dont walk into a Pound Shop and expect to get M and S quality items .,If you want quality you go the M and S and pay or you go the Pound Shop for the cheap prices .
You cant go to Pound Shop for the cheap goods and then bleat that it doesnt meet your standards
I can't see a blind bit of difference between the service I get in Lidl and what I'd get in Tesco.
No-one packs your goods in Tesco do they?

And Lidl don't charge for parking either.

I quite like the 'being rushed through checkout' thing. Having lived close enough to Asda to be able to call it my corner shop for the last ten years, I know half the staff on the checkouts better than I know a lot of my neighbours. It probably makes me a Bad Person, but theirs are the checkouts I'll avoid I don't want small talk, I feel uncomfortable with comments like 'Not such a big shop this week, then?' (my shopping habits are my own business) and still blush slightly at the time one of the checkout girls picked up a packet of flaked almonds and said to my-notorious-for-bargain-hunting-self 'Oooh - you know there's no yellow sticker on these?'!

Yup. I am actually capable of picking up an item that hasn't graced the inside of the bargain bin. Cheek. Shut up and rush me through the checkout like the classier supermarkets do

bib - I've never seen the bucket of Greek Yoghurt in Asda and I shop there every week. Only the £1 containers (500g) that most supermarkets have, not the 1kg bucket with handle that Lidl do.
