Just a thought I had as to what people's attitudes were towards acts on The X Factor/Britain's Got Talent/The Voice and the material they release. No matter how much you liked the song/material would you refuse to go out of your way to buy it because it was the material of a talent show contestant? I wouldn't, personally but then I've been a fan of The X Factor/Britain's Got Talent since I was young.

Not at all.
Some people can be snobbish but if an act from X Factor went on to release a great single that I really liked, I would buy it. It makes no sense if someone really likes a song but refuses to buy it just because the singer became famous through X Factor or BGT. It's just seeing sub-par acts getting pushed so much on these shows that irritates me the most. |

Nope, if it was good enough id buy it. Bought stuff from Girls Aloud and Will Young and I have streamed Ella Henderson, James Arthur, Fleur East, Little Mix and others.
Its not really my taste most of it but good pop is good pop. |

Not a problem. If an artist can produce some good music I wouldn't be bothered they came from a talent show. I really like Little Mix, for example.

Yes...because the nature of a talent show is the opposite of actually finding talent...but if people want to keep listening and supporting this crap it is up to them.
Should be in showbiz forum not music. |

Considering these shows have been running in the UK for 15+ years, have we actually had a song that is how thought as a modern classic? Or even close? |

Seems petty to deliberately ignore a song you like just because someone found fame on a reality TV show. I absolutely despise The X Factor, but James Arthur's latest album was really good...so I bought it. Why wouldn't I?

I'd say One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful is a pretty good pop song. Even some who don't like One Direction think so. Will Young's Leave Right Now? It's quite a recognisable song anyway. |

If I like the music then no, it doesn't matter if they came from a talent show or not. I've bought stuff of Girls Aloud, Liberty X, Alexandra Burke, Little Mix, Ben Haenow (mum wanted his album for Christmas 2015), Fifth Harmony (weren't they from US X Factor) and a few others. I've also listened to other songs from British and American talent shows.

No there have been some great albums released by talent show contestants. I don't watch them myself but every so often someone will pique my inteeest.
Diana Vickers- two great albums Ella Henderson- A really talented young woman Jennifer Hudson- goes without saying So sometimes someone can outshine and over come the machine to stand out. |

There hasn't been a U.K. talent show act yet that's made the sort of music to my personal taste after appearing in the show. Though I have music released by Peyton from this years XF that he made years previously.
I've really liked several of the American Idol acts though but think Jennifer Hudson is the only one I've purchased anything by. Actually I really liked Back 2 Love by Rueben Stoddard and Kelly Price so I think that would be my favourite song by someone from a rtv talent show |

Musically yes, but pop isn't a genre I care for.
There have been talented comedians who got their break on talent shows (Les Dawson on Opportunity Knocks and Lenny Henry on New Faces). |

It can take a while before a song is called a classic. But these are good pop songs.

typically yes. main reason is those shows appeal to a certain type of audience, so they aren't looking for the type of act i'd be interested in. i can't think of a single act in history who has went on from a TV talent show to become an act who has made a record of musical significance generally those acts will have a period of popularity of the back of the show and if they stay in showbusiness they will end up on jukebox musicals or working in places like butlins or other light entertainment daytime tv type stuff no one is going on a TV talent show with any realistic hopes of winning if they are a geniunely talented musician with potential to do something groundbreaking. the judges of those shows are just looking for the next pop act who can be dressed in the latest fashions and perform tracks that blokes in a studio have writtena and recorded for them to "sing" on a track that some other blocks will get them dancing in a music video to help sell calendars and posters at xmas. those shows are for people who want fame as opposed to making great music |

God no, some of my favourite singers are the product of a talent show, Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Young, all from Nashville Star. All great singers that have developed and found their own voice since first appearing on the show.

The problem is there are tons and tons of good pop songs out there, non of these stand out as something special. The older ones on your list are already pretty much forgotten.
It's hard to get agreement on what is a good pop song let alone a 'classic'. Almost no matter what you suggest is a classic, there is some dissenter who will not like that song. I suggested 'Bittersweet Symphony' by The Verve is a classic in a thread but found that there were some who simply would not agree. I'm sure there is someone who thinks that 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is not a classic! |

but after 15 odd years of tv talent shows, just what % of finalists (it really doesnt have to be just the winners, as in most cases its touch and go) do go on to produce decent pop songs?... i do think there is some justification for writing off or ignoring acts from tv talent shows. |

Going off at slight tangent...
When I watched Les Miserables on stage a few years ago, one of the main roles, Marius was played by Gareth Gates.... he was a lot better than I expected him to be |

There's no real reason to. There have been some great singers and artists who have used talent shows as a platform. I'd rather people write off the show (one in particular) in question than the contestants - don't hate the player, hate the game.
