Does anyone remember these? They were used in camcorders, notably Sony camcorders to record footage onto. Occasionally I'm sure we might have accidentally recorded over some footage and that ends up being lost forever. As it is old technology there's no current way of recovering recorded-over footage, do you think this might be available in the future? It would be nice for someone to start a Kick-starter or something similar for it.

Once it's gone it's pretty well gone for ever, as recording over it wipes out what was there previously.

An HDD is a different matter, as long as it's not been overwritten, as all deleting it does is mark the space as 'available' - so if the sectors haven't been overwritten then you can recover the data.

Is there any chance the technology might be available in the future?

Sorry no chance. It's the same with any tape format, analogue or digital, if you erase it it is gone forever.

Magnetic tapes degrade and lose their data over time anyway. Recovering deleted data is impossible, sorry.

Obviously not, and there's not even any incentive to try and do so.

Dunno, if someone invented a machine that could play everything you ever recorded on tape regardless of how many time you recorded over it there would be demand!

Only a VERY minor one, bearing in mind even if it was at all possible quality would be abysmal - not to mention that video tape is long obsolete, and anything you wanted off a tape should have been converted many years ago..
