Normally, it is the sugar content, so it should taste more of the fruit.
But then again I have been brainwashed by Tiptree Jams.
I can tell the difference, I'm not a Tiptree fan but I do love Bonne Maman, some of the posters on here would hang anyone who didn't eat value ranges of everything and swear that they tasted the same as other brands.....

Sorry, what is your point?
My point is, the majority of Waitrose produce isn't exclusive to Waitrose, considering many here say that their foods are far finer than elsewhere.

"Their" beef is sold elsewhere in other supermarkets, as is "their" bread, "their" mayonnaise, "their" chocolate etc

Oh I don't doubt that for a minute, but I do suspect that other retailers mix their suppliers which is why they can't state a farm on their packaging.

Lots of people ARE interested in food provenance and seeing clearly on the packaging where the meat, fruit, veg etc. came from will influence buying patterns.

Asda or Morrisons Tiger bread..sliced.
Asda is the other side of the river, so too far for me and i do not really like the place, another shop I have been in twice since it opened.
I like Morrisons Hedgehog bread, that is ok, but if I buy bread, I try to get it from a market store or a small shop in town. But i do make it myself if i have time.

I may be wrong but I thought that both M&S and Waitrose state the source farm on their packaging, if it's from Hereford then it's from Hereford.
But do it say it is from Hereford?

Yes, and it states the exact farm in Hereford that the meat/ fruit/ veg comes from.

'Open Air' retail parks exist everywhere! Ours has a Tesco, Waitrose, B&Q etc.
All served by bus routes that many shoppers use.
What is your point!
My point is that it is a blot on the landscape and was done as cheap as possible, they should have put a cover on it. it is also away from the city centre and have taken shops out of the city centre where we was told that would not happen, once again we was lied to, but with politicians we get used to that.

Do you buy anything from these retail parks?

As i said, I only had a look, but the prices are high, a pot of Jam is £2, what on earth makes a pot of jam cost £2 apart from having the duchy name on it? £1.20 for their bottom of the range butter, I know butter is not cheap these days, but when it is suppose to be the basic, value type range, then surly the price should be that.

i was going to get bread flour while I was in there, but at £1.79 I thought they can stick it.

I have no idea who Jacksons bread is, no doubt it is still mass produced bread and to be honest I am going off that type of bread these days. I am not saying that there is something in that you get what you pay for, one of the reasons I do not buy much from Aldis and Lidls is because i think they are too cheap and the quality of a lot of their products are not up to scratch, also they do not have the variety, but there is going over the top. is anyone really going to tell the difference between Jam that cost £2 to some that cost less than a quid? I doubt they will.

I also found our Waitrose cramped as it is not that large, not much room to move around and the layout seems confusing, there seems to be seats in silly places for people to sit down.

i do not like shopping for food at the best of time to be honest, maybe it is me getting older and getting annoyed with people spending more time on their phones than they do looking at what they are doing and swinging their trolley around not looking where they are going.
I pay £2 plus sometimes for the jam,s I like. I can tell the difference as I prefer one with a very high fruit content.
I like Wilkins & a couple of others, I do like Wilkins raspberry preserve & some of the more unusual ones. There is a bigger variety to choose from. Another favourite of mine is St Dalfour. The jar is packed with whole fruits.
I wouldn't buy an economy pot of jam as even the appearance dosent appeal to me, let alone the ingredients.
Having said that, I don't need to shop at Waitrose to buy the higher quality jams or brands, I prefer.

i never tried tiptree jam,

I never said that value stuff was as good as higher price stuff, but to be honest some of it is, butter after all is butter, unless you use milk from say Jersey cows and you do get a slightly different taste.

As for jam, i prefer the cheaper jam, mainly because I do not like my jam stuffed to the top of the jar with fruit, it is suppose to be jam, after all.
Pollock fish is almost as good as cod and a lot cheaper and more sustainable.

That is not true for all, good quality beef is tastier than cheaper cuts, but it is amazing what you can do with the cheaper cuts.

I really do not understand where we are gong with this debate!
Various supermarkets exist to fulfil various markets.
Some of us shop in one shop, some in another and, shock horror, some shop in them all!
They all have their position in the retail chain.

There isn't one 'right' place to do your shopping.

M&S were the only ones not involved in the horsemeat scandal as they were the only supermarket with their own suppliers. I haven't forgotten that

Absolutely, only today I bought a pound of beef skirt for a stew, the cheapest cut I could buy today, tastes amazing after being cooked for hours. Likewise I also buy lamb neck from the butchers.

Also on your point about expensive cuts being more tasty, I love fillet beef on an occasion but my husband always has a less expensive steak, he says that a fillet has no taste.

We are all different!

If I'm being REALLY self righteous I need to declare now that most of my veg shopping is done at home, just feet from my back door.

I'm sooooo amazing

Love to do that, but we only excel at killing plants off!
We even saw off an 'all weather' cactus.

Back on topic - why do Waitrose have such poor computer systems and user apps ?

LOL, well I managed to kill a mint this year....

Try runner beans and courgette, they are like triffids!

Back on topic, I have no idea about Waitrose systems as I don't shop there that often. I do still really think that, in their place in the market, they deliver a very good product.

I don't use Waitrose direct but I get quite a few of their products from Ocado. I'm a huge fan of their essential range. Their essential baked beans are the my favourite, even over the branded beans.
Their own brand Cheddar's are better than the genuine biccies....Far more cheesy and only 80p...Well nommie
