It was a simple phishing scam. The word hacking implies using bots to gain access to a system or computer. That is not what happened.

The reports don't provide empirical evidence of who the hackers actually were and they contain an awful lot of supposition. There is certainly nothing to suggest that Putin ordered it but we are expected to accept, in the words of Obama, that "not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin" which makes Obama sound crazy - as if he thinks Putin is some sort of James Bond super-villian, tapping away at his keyboard hacking trying to control the world. It really is nonsense. Decades ago i would have accepted what the US security services said as the unvarnished truth. But not now - we've seen too much falsity and propaganda.

Putin has declared that he won't stoop to any tit-for-tat reprisals.
No doubt Mr Trump has reassured him that his diplomats can come back on the 21st of Jan.

Just said on the BBC lunchtime news that Putin wont retaliate by expelling any US diplomats in a tit-for -tat until President Elect Trump has commented

Except everyone aside from Trump is pissed off about this. Trump would be as well, but he can't admit that he received help from the Russians. Republicans in Congress are none too happy about this either and they pass sanction bills.

The US president tried to threaten us effectively with trade sanctions if we didn't vote the way the US government desired in the Brexit referendum presumably he thought we would bow to his superior wisdom. This was such a basic diplomatic error I could hardly believe what he had done.

You have to blame the DNC and Clinton or who ever runs the security that there systems got so easily phished.

The Gary McKinnon case really just shows you how rubbish the Americans are at security and they should look at their own issues. As usual they need someone to blame.
