As the New Year's Eve celebrations get underway on the streets of London there will be extra policing including covert and ared police patrolling the tube network. With this policing in London are other cities receiving the same amount of protection as people line the streets to celebrate?

It's nothing new really. Every time I go to a major London train station I see armed police.

Presumably areas will receive the level of protection commensurate with the level of threat perceived by those who have security insight unavailable to you and I.

Or is this just another resentful London bashing thread?

Yes, there will be armed police in several major British cities at New Year including Manchester and Birmingham. London will always be the biggest target (capital cities always are) but other cities are still high risk

Rest assured there will be armed police in pain clothes as well as the SAS in London

Indeed.

We must hope that everyone gets through night safely and party like we haven't a care in the world

Screw 'em all!

This can only be a good thing surely? Anything that helps people to stay safe.

Other major cities should also receive armed policing on NYE, as a terrorist attack needn't necessarily be confined to the capital.

Was to be expected. Hopefully nothing happens and everyone is safe and has a great time. Wish I was going!

Still not convinced armed police on the streets are key in preventing terrorist incidents rather than, say, the intelligence services learning about shit in advance, but this really shouldn't be a "yay London" or "f*** off London" argument, to be honest.

Not sure having, or even NEEDING to have, armed police on the streets is either something to be proud of or something to be resentful of others for.

I mean, I understand why it's a thing they kind of have to do- I'm not knocking the police on this one. Whether it's actually doing something or just being seen to be doing something, it's not a thing anyone really wants to have to see in their city. I hope everyone has a safe New Year everywhere and guns aren't required. As, I'm sure, do the armed officers themselves.

I thought that armed police were standard issue in That London. I saw half-masked men holding submachine guns guarding various buildings last time I was there.

Well yes, obviouly as opposed to that. Those threads just doesn't seem to be as prevalent tbh. Certainly there are posts along those lines occasionally but usually it seems to be in response to a anti London statement.

Frankly it is a rather ridiculous state of affairs for such regional divisions to exist; a result, in part, of the policy of sowing discontent by certain newspapers to encourage sales and by some politicians hoping to gain votes. Anyone with half a brain can see it for the tedious, irrelevant silliness it is IMO.

We should all like and value the places we live. The fact that Yorkshire (for example) is eye-poppingly beautiful in places doesn't detract from the sheer variety of people and life in London, which in turn doesn't detract from the fascination of some of the great castles and stately homes all around the country.

All of those things belong to us all and we should chose which aspects suit us best and enjoy them, preferably without seething with resentment at the rest.

Do you think there may be a few extra?
Threat of exploding Scotsmen perhaps?
Or can you think of any other reason?
