I wasn't around when the first Michelle was but I can understand why people are pissed off, it would be like recasting Kat or Stacey!

I think it's too early to judge yet, though half the time I do have to keep reminding myself who she actually is.
I hope they don't go down the very predictable route of hooking her up with Max. |

Michelle Fowler was involved in the storyline that really made the tabloids take notice of Eastenders - who was the father of Vicky - other than that she was selfish, whiny, miserable, cruel - leaving Lofty standing at the alter, then deigning to marry him only to have an abortion without even having the courtesy of letting him know what she was intending to do - this wasn't one of her one night stand pregnancies this was her husband! she always had a condescending attitude to her family even though they supported her through every disaster and crisis which was mostly of her own making, off screen she appears to have continued in her self absorbed behaviour - Vicky was difficult so she was packed off to live with Pauline, she has some kind of crisis of conscience and makes Peggy's death all about her by choosing this time to reveal Mark jnr's true father, doesn't bother to show up to her mother's, brother's uncle pete or Lucy's funeral (she can be forgiven for Arthur as she had just given birth to Mark)
I am glad they have recast Michelle, I don't consider her to be iconic but she is of course one of the originals, however unless there is a very good reason why she has abandoned her son and current husband at Christmas she is unfortunately the same self centred self absorbed person she has always been and I am hoping that Sharon, Ian or Martin or all three point out a few home truths to her! |

My 2ps worth is that it's a good thing, I like the idea and she seems a good actress, the only kind of issue really is the history, Michelle was a huge character and they have to recapture that now with Jenna,
There's an amount of dramatic licence needed, glaze over the fact she hasn't come back in 20 years never mind her mom, brother dieing, her daughter having found out her dad was alive, her best friends countless tragedys, now she turns up presumably becomes she has no where else to go, |

Lol fair enough maybe that wasn't the greatest example
![]() tbh it amuses me the amount of people on the forums who still even mention the first Peggy. I completely understand ongoing discussions about the recasts of Sam, Ben, Peter, Lucy, etc because they are main characters and were so at the time of recasting. But the first Peggy had been in it for 10 eps!! I mean, come on?!

There was no need for Michelle to come back - imo. There are plenty of other times when they could of done with her back but this isn't one of them. As Susan Tully has made it clear that she does not want to go back into acting, then Michelle should of stayed where she was. The Fowlers and Beales do not need her.
I have no opinion of Jenna Russel one way or another. She is not lighting up the screen for me though. I was a Susan Tully fan from her Grange Hill days and actually watched EE because she and Wendy Richard were in it. So any actress playing Michelle had a hard act to follow where I was concernced. |

I really dont see what the problem at all .she just has to settle in and be given time. Martin has been recast 3 times now and to be honest I have excepted martin 3 now. Mark was recast twice and ben is now on the 5th actor also Peter Beal has been recast 5 times .Sue Tally was never the greatest actresses for those who remember her. so iconic being thrown around is ridicules .Sue has no plans to return to acting. so it's time to get over it and give jenna a fair go

Maybe I will be proved wrong, but as things stand I do not see any need for Michelle in the show. |

Wow, the forum users at DS really know to give something chance.
How about you wait and see. I think on here it's a race to see who can get the latest moan thread up first. |

Michelle Fowler is not iconic. How anyone can think this is beyond me. When you talk to random people about EastEnders, they don't go 'Oh I loved Michelle', it's 'I loved Kat', or 'I loved Janine', or 'I loved Peggy/Pat/Dot' etc etc.
Jenna is better than the original. Not totally sold yet but I'm gonna give her a chance. I'm liking her more and more. It was the right decision. |

Susan Tully acting wasn't that much greater then Gillian Taylforth or Leticia Dean and I'm a fan of Sharon but I know she has her limitations in her acting. I've only seen Jenna Russell work on Born and Bred, so I'm not gonna say she better yet but how can we see what she capable of if some are not willing to give her a chance. Instead of trying to shout the loudest of she crap or SOC should be axed etc etc, why not give her more then a week before we start judging her credentials for the job. |

I remember when Michelle, Sharon and Ian were young and hanging out with each all the time
Now when i see the three together again, it is not really the same as you would love to see the original actress there with Sharon and Ian reminiscing and talking about the good old days. Somebody said she is like an imposter. Well she is as she is new, even though she is cast as Michelle. Hopefully we will get used to her and the old Michelle is wiped from our minds |

I have no problem with the re cast, wish she had a bit of a U.S. accent...she's a bit too genteel. Otherwise great

Her return has all the hallmarks of Kaffy's, wander around doing nothing and just become wallpaper, and I don't want to hear the "slow burn" excuse for yet another dull endless storyline, this time whatever "secret" Michelle is keeping.

Its silly how people who claim Shirley and Mick Carter are iconic are trying to imply Michelle isn't.
Michelle IS iconic. She is well known to an entire generation of EastEnders viewers. Who was Vicky's father went on for months and is the reason Den got his dirty nickname. The impact that story had and its legacy is no different to the Kat and Zoe story. People might not name drop Michelle much but that is because she has been gone 21 years. It will be the same for Peggy in 20 years time too. You know guys, it is possible to like both versions. It isn't a contest where to praise Jenna you must insult Susan. |

What irks me is Jenna Russel's very neutral accent. There's no trace of East London.

Has to be an improvement.
Susan Tully was poor. That's why she jacked it in. |

Jenna Russel comes across as middle class. Much more West London than East London. Tully's Michelle had a ripe Cockney accent - where has that gone?

The jury is out AFAIC. As an "older" fan I well remember Susan Tully in the role and she will forever be Michelle. However, I'm prepared to give Jenna Russel a chance to prove that she can carry this. A lot will depend on the storylining and thus far we haven't seen much. I am however a bit worried at the Max/Michelle interaction we saw on Wednesday night. If the writers are preparing the ground for a relationship then pass the sick bag. I don't think either character would benefit from this and I hope something more original is on the cards.

While I'm sure she is a fine actress - recasting Michelle Fowler is the biggest mistake in the last 20 years.....I'd prefer tney kill her off

I'm 50/50 on it. Depends on what storylines she has. In an ideal world Sue would be back but I'm sure the new actress will make her mark. I'm sure I read somewhere that Adam and Letitia were happy about it as they know Jenna from old. Not that it matters. They all have to do what the producer wants.

No issues with the recast but I can't see the point in bringing back the character. Other than being friends with Ian and Sharon and Martin's elder sister there didn't seem to be a huge reason to bring the character back.
