She neither looks nor acts anything like Michelle Fowler. It's the most unecessary and bizarre recast in the show's history. People change but they don't change that much! Go back 21 years and, sure, Ian and Sharon are different now but they're still recognisable as the same people (and not just because it's the same actors).
The character is simply too noteworthy to be recast ever. Michelle's teen pregnancy and the Who's The Daddy storyline put EastEnders on the map alongside Den and Angie. Imagine Den and Angie coming back to the show 21 years after their exits played by different actors. It simply wouldn't fly and neither does Michelle's recast. Nothing against the actress but she's not Michelle. Mark, Martin, Peggy, Sam, Ben, etc. were small fry in comparison to Michelle. And she's not even one of my favourite characters. It's just wrong on all levels. Michelle belongs in the past and off screen. |

Martin is Michelle's brother, not cousin.
But honestly, Michelle should have returned long ago when she was really needed - now, when so much has changed and people have come and gone, just what is the point?? |

In an ideal world Sue Tully would have returned to the role. It would seem as though they made many attempts to persuade her to come back, but clearly she has moved on completely from acting and so they simply had to recast. In a way that's quite refreshing, she has directed many shows as her Wiki entry indicates:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Tully Seems another world from seeing her, as I did, as the misfit schoolgirl Suzanne Ross in Grange Hill, now so many years ago. |

This is a genuine question and I'm not trying to start an argument or anything but can you please explain why the recast of Peggy didn't work for you? Why a character that was played originally by Jo Warne for just 10 episodes , then 3 years later played full time by Barbara Windsor for the next 16 years, never worked for you?
![]() Obviously Windsor's version of the character has all but erased the first version but it was a huge stretch to go from Peggy 1.0 to Peggy 2.0. I wouldn't say it didn't work as Peggy went on to become an icon of the show but the recast is absurd. |

Not to answer for sqwidge but, for me, it was laughable to see a tall, rough, mannish looking battleaxe turn into a short, busty dwarf played by Barbara Windsor. The 2 versions of the character couldn't be further apart in looks. The first Peggy may only have been in 10 episodes but that was what we knew her as for 3 years before the recast. Very jarring and laughable at the same time.

I wouldn't say it didn't work as Peggy went on to become an icon of the show but the recast is absurd. But my main point in my question to Sqwidge was that Peggy was a minor character from 3 years ago and appeared in (and sorry for emphasising this yet again ) just TEN episodes so tbh in theory she was hardly going to be widely remembered at the time of the recast. Although clearly I'm wrong on that considering people STILL remember her 25 years later !!

The 2 Peggys are similar character-wise.

I'm prepared to give her time, she has 20 years to catch up on and we don't know why she's suddenly arrived yet , her son via Grant had barely got back

She tried ringing Mark the other day and he rejected it, so am guessing the reason she is in Walford, is something to do with Grant, and she gave Sharon a funny look that episode too, just how I interpreted it all

Michelle Fowler is an iconic character but she's NOT Michelle IMO. FFS who is this impostor?? Jenna Russel is an OK actress but EE bosses can't expect me to welcome the iconic and legendary Michelle Fowler easily????? Susan Tully played Michelle for 10 years and they should have NEVER recast her IMO. Letitia Dean and Adam Woodyatt must be furious and pissed off the bosses stupidly recast Michelle IMO.
FFS BIG mistake!! Rant over!!! Hope you feel better for that! I like the new Michelle and in a few weeks we will all be used to the fact that it isn't Susan Tully. For goodness sakes, Letitia Dean and Adam Woodyatt are professionals, they are also friends with Susan and know the score. They are not going to be either furious or pissed off. Grow up. |
