Has to be the election of the Donald to be the next POTUS. Still can't quite believe it really happened.
Politician of the Year
Has to be Nigel Farage and for me to say that proves just what a crazy year it's been and how stupendously useless the bulk of politicians have been.
Farage has achieved exactly what he wanted and not many politicians can say that.
Best Thread on DS Politics
Has to be the long running US Presidential thread. I learned a lot about the process and US politics from some well informed posters on there and also some great trivia. Never knew Trump had a cameo role in Home Alone 2 until I read it on the thread.
Highlight of the Year
The election of Sadiq Khan in the London Mayoral election. Goes to show that dirty campaigning doesn't always win.
Could Have Been Worse
We could have had that intellectual pygmy Andrea Leadsom as PM. That would have been horrendous.
Sack One MP
You can sack one MP right now and I would have no hesitation in getting rid of Philip Davies, a horrible wee man who goes out of his way to cause upset and abuse the power he has.

Shock of the Year

Brexit - I went to bed with the sinking feelinng that Leave was going to lose and then the morning came, my other half informed me we had voted to leave. It left me nervous, but that feeling I had won't ever be repeated, I was genuinely elated.

Politician of the Year

Can only be one, Joe Cox, she was on the other side to me when it came to the referendum, but she put herself in harms way to protect people and paid the ultimate price. She was well regarded by many across commons, she has been a genuine loss to British politics.

Highlight of the Year

Cameron and Osbourne being thrown annd kicked out to pasture

Political Party of the Year

Conservatives, they have went from strength to strength, whilst the rest IMHO have just become a parody of themselves trying to get their voices heard. SNP being chief among them, Sturgeon seemingly shouting at the top of her voice threatening another IndyRef and no one is listening.

Nice Person of the Year

A bizarre one I will admit, however I would give that to Corbyn, even in the face of a political slaughtering he still remains and affable fellow with no axe to grind. He doesn't seem to hold grudges and genuinely seems a smashing bloke too.

Actually, I agree with a lot of Bangla's list, although Highlight would be the shockwave (of excitement for people like me) which rippled round the country as the Sunderland Brexit vote result came in.
Also the MP I would like to sack is Emily Thornberry for numerous 'crimes' but the red card is for "“Put it this way, how many people here voted to take their next door neighbour’s job away?”.

Not all the bills. I recall seeing him once get up to talk on a private members bill and at the beginning he said he was not going to try and talk it out. He still got a load of abuse from opposition MPs who couldn't accept what he had said with good grace, guess they would have preferred him to talk the bill out so they could upload more spite and bile towards him .....

Shock of the year was definitely waking up to find Brexit had happened. I'd stayed up to see the Newcastle and Sunderland votes, which didn't auger well. But given there were no exit polls (I hadn't realised these things compare against previous votes and there was none, so hence no polls), the currency traders who operate 24/7, had commissioned their own. When I went to bed at 1am the odds against Brexit were 5 to 1 and the pound was at $1.50. So I figured that was that, Remain had won. The problem was that the traders did all their exit polling in London.

Yes - the American Presidential election thread and those posters who attempted to ensure it wasn't a continuous Hillary love fest. I remember some posters this time last year stating that Trump would withdraw from the race by Super Tuesday - how wrong they were.

Politician of the year
Jacob Rees Mogg - scourge of the remoaners - closely followed by the wonderful Gisela Stuart. Trump isn't eligible as he isn't one.

Highlight of the year
May sacking Osborne. There is a special place reserved in hell for politicians like him.

Party of the year
UKIP - punch ups, multiple leaders, resignations, suspensions and despite this all achieving the objective for which it was founded.

Too close between brexit and trump. I was on a coach to Scotland the night of the brexit results coming in and stayed awake all night at the back of the coach watching on my phone. Everybody on the coach was a remainer and gutted when they woke up, while I was nearly crying with joy. Also funny the one day I was in Scotland, only time I've ever been, and Donald trump was there for the day.

Thread of the year:
American presidential thread. Very informative.

I'd have to go with ken Clarke (closely followed by the lunatic soubre). Hes in the wrong party and is completely out of touch.

Party of the year:
I'd love to say ukip, but it has to be the tories. O can't stand Cameron but he was great in pmqs, his comments about the previous week in the Labour Party compared to the tories was brilliant. Someone will be able to quote it properly but it was something like in the past week we've had resignation, coronation something else something else while the party opposite haven't even decided the rules yet. The quick promotion of Teresa may and the smoothly moving on we're what was needed at the time and showed them to be a strong party moving forward.

Politician of the year:
Can't be anyone other than Nigel farage. He has dedicated years for something he believes, and without him many of us would not have had our say at all on eu membership. I was going to public meetings with him years ago with only a handful of people at each one. He has worked and campaigned tirelessly for this. He didn't go out and riot to make his point, he spent years campaigning and building support and he got what he got into politics for through the ballot box on 23rd June.

I can't think of one politician worthy of any award this year but there have been more than a few weasels.

Osborne, Cameron, Johnson, Gove, Fox, Clarke ,May, Soubry, Leadsom, Clegg, Farron, Corbyn, McDonnell, (that daft Welsh one that wanted to be leader), all of the two green ones and the idiot that was from UKIP that looks like Homer Simson.

I wish they could all make a New years resolution and POAD.
