EE: Call centre from hell
So obviously a gang of hardened criminals would be cold calling energy suppliers in a likely minimum wage call centre job. And it'd have to be one managed by the most absurd, James Bond villain-like character ever written.
Enjoying how Lee's storyline is unfolding but the scenes at work completely take me out of it. It's such an unrealistic portrayal of working in a call centre it borders on comical. It's clear whoever is in charge of the of these scenes hasn't ever worked in a call centre and done the very minimum research into what it's like. They're not the nicest places to work but the characters, particularly the manager, in Lee's are almost comic book-like. It's also hard to believe that someone, even under the intense pressure as Lee is, wouldn't tell them to stick the job, so ridiculously obnoxious everyone who works there is. if it was a realistic call centre you could still do the same thing (failing to meet targets, clashing with colleagues etc) but without it being quite so ridiculous. |

The thing is, Lee can't just tell them to stick their job. He's in mounting debt with bills to pay and possibly a baby on the way. He's the main earner of his household, so if he loses his job, it could take some time before he finds another one and he can't claim job seekers if he quits, so they'd lose the flat.
In last night's episode, Whitney said that it wouldn't be a bad thing if Lee failed his probation, but it's alright for her to say that when she clearly doesn't have a clue about their finances or contribute a lot and she spends money without checking first. |

I would hardly call them hardened criminals more like a bunch of petty crooks and thieves so quite fitting they work in a energy supplier call centre really.

I don't think Oz and co. are meant to be hardened criminals, to be fair, but rather opportunitistic petty thieves. I am enjoying Lee's depression storyline but must admit some of the call centre scenes are a bit OTT - especially's Lee scamming of the ridiculously posh granny

Not really. He has a ready made job working on the pub with him family. That scene at the end of last night's ep really got to me and was brilliantly played by the actor. Him sitting in his car as the realisation of what his only option is in his mind was so realistic. I remember one day finishing work early and thinking "brilliant, I'll go and meet a friend or something." However, I stood there in my office for a good ten minutes and was an absolute blank - there was nothing going on in my head except "kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself." I went straight to a pub and got ossified and then sat at the top of a cliff near home trying to get the nerve up to jump. That failed so I went home, collected a massive bag of anti depressants, mood stabilisers, anti psychotics, xanax and pain killers and a bottle of gin, went back to the cliff, starting horsing the drugs and drink down me and eventually rolled off the cliff. However, someone saw me do it, it was high tide and the life boat was literally around the cove so I was rescued and ended up in a psychiatric ward for a few months. And that's only three years ago! Anyway - all this came to my mind during Lee's silent final scene. He is literally at a loss and there is only one way out. Powerful stuff, brilliant acting all 'round, so truthful. Self-therapy over....
