Should also be remembered that it's not compulsory for people to move over. I generally do if possible or try to leave a gap ahead if I can't move over so it allows traffic in.
However it's up to the car on the slip road to adjust their speed to join traffic. That's why the slip road is there. To give them chance to look across at the traffic already on the motorway and decide their speed and how they're going to merge.

It was a freak day, there had been an accident on the m1 and it had to be closed for emergency repairs its not normally that bad, I understand from the news that there had been an accident on a nearby junction on the m62 too and so that had also had an impact! Normally the traffic does keep moving around the 30-40mph mark, if as I said earlier folk learnt to merge at speed then it would be quicker

That's so true but here - not sure how it is elsewhere - it's so commonplace for people to slow right down on the slip road it's almost become an obligation for those on the motorway to move out to let them in but you are absolutely right.

I hate getting stuck behind someone on the slip road because I lose speed and opportunities to get in. I try to keep as big of a gap between me and the person in front so I have a bit of leeway to get to a suitable speed to get in a gap while I've some slip road left.

It causes problems when you have HGVs behind you which are speed limited to 56mph.

56mph is the maximum speed they are limited to, not the minimum.

I do so if it isn't a problem but I always leave a big gap in front anyway

Like I said, I move over where I can but it's so commonplace that you now get people who refuse to believe it's the car on the slips responsibility. They're so used to people moving over that they assume wrongly that it's something the cars on the carriageway have to do when they actually don't.

Yes, it's the maximum speed but most lorries are going to be bear their maximum speed on motorway journeys because they're driving over a long distance and to a delivery schedule.

Anyone who's driven Ina motorway will have experienced the numerous times you get lorries overtaking each other and taking several miles and minutes to do so. The reason they're so slow overtaking is because the lorry has reached its limiter and is only going slightly faster than the lorry being overtaken. It's annoying to car users but it makes a difference to lorries over a long journey.

It's bad enough this happening anyway but when it's because a car is going so slow that a lorry feels the need to overtake because it's catching it up then it becomes doubly annoying because the car can avoid this by at least attempting to make 60mph.

As soon as a lorry moves into the middle lane all traffic behind starts funnelling into the 3rd lane to get past creating bunching and turning 3 lanes into 1.

It may not be chaos but it's bloody annoying and even more annoying when it's caused by a driver dawdling when they can easily go a little faster where a lorry can't.

It takes a HGV a time to get up to speed and someone toodling along will keep causing them to brake and that then has a knock on affect with other HGV behind them. Its a absolute pain when you are behind a car crawling along because they will not adjust their speed enough for you to either pass or drive comfortable behind them


If you are not comfortable driving at speed then don't get onto the motorway its not compulsory

Its a courtesy that many older drivers do . if you have room to move over then move. I was taught that its the right thing to do if you can.

Most things I was taught seem to have become obsolete. Indicating, lane discipline, not parking where you will block other driver's vision. Seems the harder the test gets the worse drivers we get. Im not really sure why that is.

Set off at 8.30. Fairly quiet to begin with then motorways were surprisingly busy in the late morning!

Dawdling is one thing, dawdling in the middle lane is **** taking

I would never travel on a motorway with many of my friends. (I handed in my licence at 75, which should be the driving age limit.)

Motorways are some of the easier roads to drive on, especially compared to things such as turning right onto a fairly busy national speed limit road.

It would be nice if more drivers indicated when changing lanes and understood the need to use the slip road to get up to speed. I will never forget that idiot who I moved into the second lane for so they could easily merge. They couldn't of been doing more than 30mph when they joined and moved straight across to the second lane without indicating (this was a dual carriage way). I had to slam on the brakes and must of missed rear ending them by a couple of inches, if the road was wet I would of slammed into the back of them. Less than 40mph they were doing!

Plenty of people are good drivers even when over 75. It should depend on the person not the age.
