Always think this is worth discussing
Wrote this a couple of weeks ago when Paddy was getting slapped and punched all over the place for the lolz. http://metro.co.uk/2016/12/17/can-we...soaps-6329694/ |

I think it's a bit silly complaining about one form of violence when so much violence in general is ignored, excused or cheered.
If soaps are going to be social justice seekers, then be so. But that means seeking justice for all victims of violence, even when they're characters we don't like. So Cain Dingle, Robert Sugden and Ross Barton should all be doing time right now... |

Better to just ignore him and walk away, unless the creep is actually using physical force.

I agree with your sentiment though as if Emmerdale really was to make sure all violent criminals paid the price then the cast would be very much diminished. Quote:
To be fair, I don't think that's confined to female on male violence. Admittedly going back a bit, I remember when Paddy's affair with Viv came out he got punched by Bob and Zak in quick succession and that got played for laughs too.
In fact the only time comedy character Paddy was thumped and it wasn't played for laughs was when his son did it and Aaron of course got off scot-free with that

To be fair Robert is hardly in Cain and Ross's league. I know he killed someone but it was an accident. He is usually on the receiving end of violence.

It's not so much about female violence on male being casual and played for laughs as much as some characters are considered comedy characters and therefore them getting hit is funny whoever hits them. In fact the only time comedy character Paddy was thumped and it wasn't played for laughs was when his son did it and Aaron of course got off scot-free with that ![]() There is way too much crime and violence in ED in general though - it seems to be everyone's default setting. There' s always going to be one or two hotheads but they' re the majority in Emmerdale. It shouldn't be played for laughs either, although we might be secretly cheering the puncher

Saying that are the soaps really that much different from staged wrestling matches, which are more for entertainment than sport? People enjoy watching violence which they know isn't for real. Heck, some enjoy watching the real thing!

Nu Robert isn't violent. The Robert we had before Chrissie dumped him and he discovered his ' true love' WAS. That' s why such a dramatic turnaround over the course of a few months is highly unbelievable.

I'm not too fussed about it myself as it is a soap and a flight of fancy plus we'd have hardly anyone left if they all had to pay a price for their crimes and we'd certainly have a lot less interesting characters. |

I was thinking more about physically kidnapping and beating people up violence, even the Lodge was a bit tame compared to Cain in that he only managed to shoot someone accidentally

It's s not a morality tale! I don't like it being done for humour though, and I do wish that it wasn't the go-to for the majority of characters as it seems to be. Let's have some of them behave with some dignity! |

I agree with this and what really winds me up is how rarely violent crimes are actually reported to the police and if someone ever dares to do so they are more or less shunned by the village. Still like you say it isn't a morality tale and must not be taken serioulsy at all
![]() Donna didn' t have the same problem, as being married to a Dingle she'd had lots of practice!

Imagine ifpoor PC Swirling moved into the village, as I would like. He'd have to turn so many blind eyes his head would fall off
