lucky he didn't call her 'ugly'
Was it because he called her beautiful though? I thought it was because he put the other bit in as though its not the norm .

see I have no idea even what the problem is with what he said.

I'm going to look on the positive side. If a couple of people on twitter managed to get a man to delete a tweet for calling a woman "beautiful", with a few more on their side and a bit more effort, they might be able to ban James Blunt songs.

I think it was because he judged on her looks first, if he'd said "she was witty and intelligent, and later I also noticed she was a bit of a sort" he would have been fine

Does anyone doubt that beauty was part of what made her famous and popular? And is there anything wrong with that?
Personally, and don't all get offended it is just a personal opinion, I never thought of Carrie Fisher as beautiful, attractive - yes, beautiful, no. Obviously it's all personal opinion, eyes of the beholder and all that. Looking at pictures of her when she was young, she looks like an ordinary, attractive young woman - but not stunning. She reminds me very much of Jennifer Aniston in some ways. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=yo...w=1360&bih=591

I would say most of what made her famous wasn't her looks but was starring in one of the biggest, most iconic films of all time - her character, especially in the first film (now considered the 4th film!) wasn't made to look beautiful at all. Another part is having famous parents, which for many people growing up in Hollywood and trying their hand at the same career, can be a disadvantage.

Of course, none of this has anything to do with Steve Martin finding her beautiful - physically or spiritually. Everybody seems people differently.

agreed, she was no Bridgitte Bardot or Audrey Hepburn, but was funnier than both, and that is my tribute to her

There'll always be some out there who'll criticise others for anything. I can't see anything wrong at all in what he said about Carrie. Carrie was beautiful when she was younger.

Another image of her in her quite a bit older and still quite a looker.

If I'd have been him I'd have added another one re-iterating that she was beautiful (which she was) and saying that it was arrogant for others to criticise a message meant for Carrie. Indeed, if I'd ever said anything else about her again, it would definitely have included a reference to her beauty.

The internet could foam at the mouth, or do as it pleased.
My thoughts exactly. My question is: why oh why do people immediately bow down to nonsensical pressure such as this?

Has any celebrity ever received a pointless public backlash (such as this) and basically told the people who are offended to simply go do one? Or refuse to apologise? Or just ignore them?

So sad to see activists hijack a tribute from Steve Martin to Carrie Fisher.
It's like these people just don't understand people.

Sometimes I don't know what to make of the internet today. It was a different and better place in the early 00s. Sometimes I love and hate it today.

Why the desperate need to share your thoughts with people you have no connection or association with in the hope of simply seeking approval or "likes" or whatever?

bib - yes, most of the time, but that doesn't make the papers!

'Celebrity ignores abusive tweet' is hardly a great headline

Activists? Just people more likely, hardly activists. Being rude or idiotic on twitter doesn't make a person as an activist

I'm with you on this. I didn't think it was him saying she was beautiful that some people objected to. Like you, I thought it was the latter part of what he said that caused offence.

It can be interpreted as him suggesting that it's surprising to find that a beautiful woman can be intelligent and witty as well.

Personally, I didn't see anything wrong with what he said and I don't believe he meant it in the way it has been interpreted by some people.

Unfortunately, there will always be people who misinterpret things though.

I find it incredibly sad that people are offended by this. I think it was a wonderful compliment. That from the very beginning he knew she was beautiful but then he came to see that she was also an intelligent and witty woman.

Isn't this what we want, as women? For our female celebrities and role models not to just be seen for their looks, but for their minds and wit as well? She was very beautiful, that is a fact. While I would find it a shame for a tribute to focus solely on her looks when she was so much more, I see nothing wrong with mentioning the fact that, on first glance and without knowing more, she was simply beautiful.
Very good post I think what he said is a lovely compliment as well and not sexist, there is nothing wrong with saying she was beautiful.

It'll be the feminists who complained, they will kick off when anybody compliments a woman/women in general, probably because they know that they will never get compliments of their own
