PC Speakers for TV.
Can anyone help?
I've just bought these PC Speakers for my TV, a Sony Bravia. http://www.philips.fr/c-p/SPA4355_12...ultimedias-2.1 Set them up, working ok .... but they keep switching themselves off after 5 minutes ! ![]() I turn off via their wired remote .... turn them on again .... same thing happens. Do PC speakers not work for TVs? |

They are just a set of speakers, the only thing that might make them "PC Speakers" is that they have a 3.5mm jack plug on the end of the lead. But there is nothing about them that makes them "only" for PC use and nothing else, after all the audio out of a PC is exactly the same as that from any other device with an audio out.
Having found an English version of the webpage you linked to I found the "manual" (if it can be called that! ) for the system. There is no mention of any sort of timer or audio detection circuit that would turn the system off automatically if it didn't receive any audio input for a specified time period.Doesn't mean there isn't one though. How are the speakers connected to the TV? Are you using the headphone socket on the TV? If so turn down the Phillip speaker volume a bit and increase the TV volume to about 3/4 full. If there is some sort of audio detector circuit then it may be triggering if the TV volume is set too low. Other than that the most likely scenario is that the speakers are faulty, or the TV is. Try them on some other device and if they turn off after 5mins on that then chances are the speakers are faulty. |

Thanks.
Yeah they're connected to TV via headphones socket. Funny thing is, the last pair I had for the TV - Logitech - did the same thing, but they at least waited over an hour before switching themselves off. What worries me now is, the Logitech ones died a death after 18 months, it's like they're saying "we don't like being plugged into a TV" .... and they eventually die ![]() I'll try them in the laptop, good idea. I'm in France, hence the link. |

How on earth can they not be compatible with TVs? They just need an analogue audio signal. What could possibly be different about the headphone output of a TV compared to the headphone output of a PC that makes the speakers incompatible? I sure as hell can't think of anything.
Other than voltage level, which would affect the maximum amount of noise they can make or if they do have some sort of signal detection circuit where they need a fairly high voltage to keep them turned on. But if they work on a PC headphone output then I can't see any reason why a TV headphone output cannot work. Not making any sense. |

One thing he might try is turning the TV volume UP, and the speakers volume DOWN - they might shut-off if the signal input is too low (this would be the same from a PC as well). |

This is the information on the device in english, it is just a speaker system with no mention of auto cut off.
http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/SPA4355...a-speakers-2.1 The fact that the Logitech speakers also cut out is suspicious, what volume are you playing them at ? Do headphones connected to the TV also cut out? |

Quite right, the headphone output on a TV is no different to that on a PC - and PC speakers work perfectly on a TV (assuming it has a headphone socket).
One thing he might try is turning the TV volume UP, and the speakers volume DOWN - they might shut-off if the signal input is too low (this would be the same from a PC as well). But there is no mention of any such auto shut off in what passes for a manual (see the link above and go to the Support tab). |

I think he is running at excessive volume for these cheap units and some form of over heat protection is coming in, I think that also explains the failure of the previous speakers after 18 months and the fact that they also cut out after 1 hours use. He needs something much more powerful and no doubt much more expensive.

Thanks for 'Input' guys.
Forgot to say I did a test with the laptop and they didn't cut-out. They are connected to the mains with a plug as well as the Headphones socket on TV. Right I'm off to Albertville, fingers crossed they'll take em' back, without all the plastic protective bags they were wrapped in. |
