Hi,
I was talking to a friend recently
who thinks he is in the know on these things.

Is there any truth in the rumour of a takeover of TalkTalk by Vodafone?

I know they handle their MVNO.

Vodafone have launched Landline & Broadband/Fibre & want to get into TV.

This would give them instant Quad Play access and pit them with & against BT.

I'm with Vodafone mobile landline & Fibre
but have Sky TV.

Not sure if I'd defect from Sky to TalkTalk but the recently updated software seems to have excited a few of my mates with YouView.

The last I heard was that BT was in negotiations to buy TalkTalk's YouView business and that Vodafone had plans to launch their own TV service, like the one they have in Ireland. It was originally going to launch in April, then September, then November. It still hasn't launched. Maybe there is something to this rumour.

I hope so.

Is there many YouView v Sky comparisons?

I would think about a defection

If you want the ultimate TV service now, then it has to be Sky, for it is only they who offer Sky Atlantic, and HD in pretty well everything worth watching. On the other hand, you have to be prepared to pay for it, and it ain't cheap.

YouView from TalkTalk doesn't offer as much as Sky, but it costs a lot less. The HD channels are those available on Freeview (ie. BBC1, 2, 4, News, CBBC, Cbeebies, ITV, Channel 4, +1, 4/7, Five, Al Jazeera and QVC.). There is a great deal more HD to buy or rent in the More TV section (formerly TalkTalk Player). It has all the catch-up services, including HD on BBC iPlayer. There is also Netflix (optional), which also includes loads of good HD material.

TalkTalk's version of YouView also includes Sky 1, Sky Two, Sky Living, Real Lives, Sky Arts and Sky Sports News HQ at no extra cost if you subscribe to their Plus package, which is the only one worth going for in my opinion. This also includes the TalkTalk Film Club, which offers movies at no additional cost. These are standard definition, but the picture quality is actually rather good, at least on my 39" screen - presumably because most of the programmes were originated in HD. You can add around 30 further Sky channels if you wish. I have 38Mbps fibre (unlimited), the Plus TV package and the thirty additional Sky channels, and I pay £40 per month. That includes my line rental, all my phone calls and Internet usage. I could add Sky Cinema and Sky Sports if I wanted, but I don't.

All YouView boxes, regardless of origin, are in the process of being upgraded, free of charge, over the next couple of months. This will switch them from their current UI to a new one, which is graphically-driven and cloud-based. Effectively, this will turn them into the TV equivalent of Chromebooks - terminals to a central server (with TV tuners and recording media built in, of course). Opinions on how good the new interface is differ among those who have already received it, but the potential is enormous. It could rival Sky Q if they get it right - and at a much lower price. The big question is 'If'.
