Good for her. Lots of very valid reasons for not wanting one.

What a strange thing for Lynne to reveal.

As if she's proud she was considered for one.

She should have said no, and not told anyone.

Bizarre.

I think she was saying that giving people sir, lord or lady titles gives the impression that that person is superior to others who don't have the title, which they're not. She probably revealed it to say this.

Yes, she can hold that view but then she should not have told us she was offered one.

It just seems a rather daft thing to say. I'm sure a lot of famous people have been offered one, refused, but don't bleat on about it.

I fully support her reasons.

It's a load of pretentious nonsense. Let's give a celebrity a title for doing their job. We haven't had an Empire for generations and should have removed the Great part out of the countries title years ago.

Its a bit of a ramble what she has come out with imo, and she seems to be partly saying she deserves it. I suppose there is nothing like blowing your own trumpet.

As for empire bit, I doubt it ever enters the vast majority of people conscious thoughts when these lists are announced. They are basically "gongs" and any past objection has been more to do with cynicism than anything else imo.

That said, if more and more people reject them, it could build up a head of steam to promote change-but there will be hundreds of recipients again this year who wont be arguing(or even thinking) about the wording or the association.

It's something she clearly feels strongly about so why should she keep quiet about it? It makes absolute sense for someone who thinks the system needs changing to take the opportunity of rejecting a gong to make that point. I don't understand what you think is bizarre and she makes some very good points.

.... which would merely have left her open to suggestions of sour grapes - or that she was merely resentful at not being nominated for one.

She's entitled to her point of view and entitled to express it appropriately. It would have been weird to arbitrarily criticise the honours system in that way, if she hadn't even been nominated for one.

I heard a sports star nearly forgot hers as she was moving home. They receive letters and have to fill in form to accept it. In principal not many celebrities understand the system.

Andy Murray and Mo Farah have both been made Sirs in the Queen's New Year's Honours. Boxer Nicola Adams gets OBE along with Victoria Beckham.
Comedian Ken Dodd, actor Mark Rylance and Kinks frontman Ray Davies have also been made sirs in the Queen's New Year Honours list

Indeed. Clearly the reason she has revealed all is to point out what she feels is a system that is a bit of a shambles, not to say 'look at me and what I've been offered and turned down'. Hardly rocket science, is it?

John Cleese was could have been Knighted yonks ago - back in the 1980s I think.

But he refused. It only came out when he was asked about it. But he doesn't go on and on about it.

I think she was just telling her story and included why she thinks the honours system needs to brought into the 21st century. I'm not actually against people being given titles, I just can't see the point in it.

I have no opinion on the Honours system generally, so if she chooses to turn one down and publicly comment on the reason why, good for her, that's how you change a system, but I don't think I've ever read a more vomit inducing and self-aggrandising pronouncement about an honour. Most people tend to be quite modest about it and wonder what the fuss is about, and those that do turn them down often do so because they don't agree with them, or that their are people far more deserving that are overlooked, but not Lynn. Oh no.

"I think honours are really important and should be given to people who have done really good stuff.

"And I've changed laws and I've helped saved a lot of people's lives, so maybe I'm deserving of an honour, but I just wouldn't accept it while we still have party donors donating huge amounts of money and getting an honour."

Then again, I suppose it's refreshingly honest to hear someone say, 'Yes, I bloody well do deserve it, unlike most of them that just bought theirs'.

Has she gone 'on and on about it?' She's only mentioned it once and different news outlets have repeated it

Andy and Mo Farrah have done really well, with amazing achievements but it seems odd to honour them in this way while they're still competing and so young

Whilst I fully respect anyone's decision to turn them down are those that do forgetting that they are not politicians and whilst the cabinet office vets the awards and makes the final decisions other than political appointees people are nominated by others so is to turn it down not being slightly disrespectful to those (usually normal non political titled people) that have nominated you , those that think you deserved their nomination.
