In the early years of EastEnders Angie took an overdose during an attempted suicide, it was quite graphic in that she was seen swilling down handfuls of tablets with gin or vodka, they actually cut most of the scene out during the sunday lunchtime omnibus

I disagree

I think Lewis Richardson in Hollyoaks was better

Has anyone mentioned Maxine in Hollyoaks
I agree.

Lewis is the best suicide story I've ever seen in anything, soap or prestigious drama.

It's been very rare to show a 'successful' suicide in any soap. There's either been w uestion mark ocer whether it was intentional or deliberate (like Diane in Holby Cuty or Donna in EE) or they've survived and got the emotional help they needed.

Whilst I know they are technically suicides as they choose to take their own lives, I don't really count the cases where a character had a terminal illness as the psychology behind it, and even the bereaved familys reactions, are completely different to a suicide coming from Depression.

Kelly in Casualty back in 1991 was a successful suicide, due to Depression.

Sons And Daughters featured a few.

The most well known was Leigh running into oncoming traffic and a truck striking her head on.

Martin Healy shoots himself in the head.
Yes, there was also Alan after he learned he'd be a quadriplegic fir the rest of his life, which would probably be decades.

Wayne and Susan both attempted it a couple of times.

Not a suicide storyline but Alison Webster killed herself in Coronation Street after her baby died.

Lewis Richardson in Hollyoaks is the standout suicide storyline for me, as it showed that it's not necessarily a case of pop a few pills and drift peacefully off. Lewis suffered for that attempt for some time afterwards, during which he changed his mind but it was too late and he suffered a slow drawn out death as his organs began to shut down.
Again, agreed. It showed how drawn out and painful the reality often is. You don't just fall asleep painlessly and are found looking peacefu, serene and in your best clothes and perfect make up as often seems to presented, most recently implied with Peggy Mitchell.

Also, with Lewis, he didn't even have the comfort of his family as he saw the devastation he'd caused his Mum and his sister and friends, far from being symoathetic to his pain, were just angry at his selfishness.

CS Kevin was married to a woman Alison and their son died pretty much as soon as he was born she then kidnapped Bethany and then committed suicide due to the depression. This was in the 90s/00s.

That was very well done and powerful. So sad. He'd done some terrible things but you still felt sorry for him.

People citing Peggy and Hayley's deaths - I don't know that those count as suicides in the psychological/emotional sense of the term.

They were suffering terminal illness and simply chose to end their lives before their illnesses took them in worse ways. To me that's not true suicide as death is already imminent and certain.

I know the technical definition of suicide is taking one's owns life - but the situations are very different from Lee's storyline. They don't highlight the same issues whatsoever.

Edit: OK, I realize someone above already said this.

I agree. It was a powerful storyline and very well done. That was when Hollyoaks was a great show and not afraid to tackle tricky plots. it was harrowing watching Lewis break down crying that he didn't want to die, but knowing it was already too late.

Suicide is the biggest killer of young men, mostly as a result of mental illness so it's right that it should be covered in this way.
It has been done often when a character has a terminal illness, but seems to still be a bit of a taboo subject when covered with depression.
Some of these storylines need to be scrutinized before they're aired. Did you ever see anything handled as stupidly the time on coronation street when Steve was suffering from depression. He was ridiculed and laughed at everytime he appeared on screen. It makes a mockery of the good work that most people try do who have family or friends fighting that battle. Shame on them and any other program who make light of it. I take it so serious I honestly think they should have to appear before the broadcasting licencing board and explain why their license should be renewed.

It's quite rare that soaps cover suicide like this, it seems to a lot of the time be assisted suicide or out of guilt or that they are dying anyway. It's depressing but important I think but this sort of thing does happen

They had the silent credits over the scene and everything. Then ruined it all with the Cadburys man tootling across the screen in his truck. Unfortunate considering how Alison had just ended it.
