"Olympic stars Andy Murray, Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill are recognised in a New Year Honours list which also includes big names from the entertainment world.

Rio 2016 men's tennis champion Murray and double gold-winning athlete Farah receive knighthoods, while heptathlete Ennis-Hill becomes a dame. "

Veteran comic Ken Dodd said he felt "highly tickled" to receive a knighthood at the age of 89.

" One of the oldest recipients is 94-year-old Janet Gillespie, who is awarded a BEM for more than 60 years' volunteering for Poppy Scotland. "

Bless her, well deserved imo. Nice to see "normal" people receiving an acknowledgement.

Here we go again... A few deserved honours, and the rest are just useless ornaments for undeserving people.

Because Men are Knights (ie. Sirs). Women are Dames. (ie. Dames)

That hatchet-faced old bag Anna Wintour receives a damehood, for sitting on her bony arse, wearing sunglasses and scowling.

It's a good boot up the jacksie she deserves - not an honour.

Actually, Theresa May ought to be congratulated for this set of honours (and this comes from a strong non-Tory) for there are very few overtly political awards this time around and she's made a clean break from the thoroughly rotten Cameron-Blair past.

The great majority of people on that list have actually done worthwhile things: https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...-full-list.pdf

And she is the editor of US Vogue and lives in the USA. Why not Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue?

Prime Ministers don't do these honours. They are done by separate committee.

Why does anyone deserve anything for "services to fashion". I mean.... is that even a thing? There are a tiny minority of people who benefit from the fashion industry - and they are designers, a handful of emaciated stick insects - and miserable old hags like Anna Wintour.

That's it. Everyone else just funds their lifestyles - from the nine-year old slaving away in sweatshops, to the brain-dead consumers who spend their lives trudging round shopping centres buying more and more shoddy clothing that they don't actually need.

What on earth has she done to deserve being given even so much as a Primark giftcard?

Andy Murray knighted? Oh boy.

He's a great tennis player but too miserable. He is the patron saint of depression.

Mark Rylance is knighted. Who is he? Never heard of him. You have to be be moderately famous to be knighted and I doubt anyone knows who he is.

Ken Dodd was knighted for services to tax invasion. Well done, Ken!

You can imagine the honours people going through the list struggling to find anyone famous and still alive. They pick the names out of a hat. They Google each name just to check they're still alive!

Not forgetting that waste of space, Dame Vivienne Westwood.

Only? You may as well ask why girls 'only' become women, and why can't they be called 'men' too?

Or you could ask why do men only get a "Knighthood"? Why can't they be dames too?

Pleased to see the Chief Executive of Carers UK receive an OBE.

Several members of the DWP have received OBE's for services to Welfare Reform - couldn't help but laugh at that one!

I see Angela Rippon received an OBE for Dementia Care.

Nice to see one of the Directors of the University of Bath receive one too.

Olympic "heroes"

They run around a track really fast, swim really fast or are rich enough to have been brought up with a dancing horse. The BBC and others don't even use the word "heroes" when discussing doctors and nurses, why is it reserved for Olympians?
