Brexit vote sparks rush of British Jews seeking Portuguese passports
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...uese-passports Quote:
The UK’s decision to leave the European Union has fuelled an 80-fold increase in the number of British Sephardic Jews seeking Portuguese citizenship under a recent law intended to make amends for their ancestors’ expulsion from the Iberian peninsula more than 500 years ago.
Quote:
n the wake of June’s Brexit vote, however, a rapidly increasing number of British Sephardic Jews have been applying for Portuguese citizenship as a way to deal with the uncertainty created by the leave victory.
Quote:
Another British descendant of Sephardic Jews, who did not want to give his name, said his decision to apply for Portuguese citizenship had been political and pragmatic. BIB - Certain members of the leave campaign have a lot to answer for.
“The moment that I heard about the decree in Portugal, I said to my wife: ‘If we leave the European Union, I’m going to apply for Portuguese citizenship,’” he said. “I’m literally in mourning about Brexit. I’m a European, a cosmopolitan and I think all forms of nationalism are pretty hateful. If you look at the 19th and 20th century and see what nationalism does, it’s not a history to be particularly proud of.” Particularly distasteful, he added, had been the rhetoric surrounding the debate with its familiar attacks on “the hated Johnny Foreigner”. |

Merry New Year!!!!!
Pants, hang on, I'm a day early ![]() obv.Presumably someone at the graun is scouring foreign stats collections to see how many outrages they can tot up? This particular one, from a skim-read, looks like a chunk of a particular group has decided to move its main base, and Portugal seemed nicer than madjorka. edit: further reading as highlighted below more than adequately explains the situation. |

BIB - Certain members of the leave campaign have a lot to answer for. “This law came out at a time when precisely Turkish Jews are feeling under stress from the political changes that are taking place in Turkey,” said Rothwell. “Five hundred years ago, Spain and Portugal expelled the Jews and the Sultan of the Ottoman empire received them very happily – it was a very good deal – and they have been living in those areas very happily for 500 years, but now the circle is kind of closing because the Turkish Jews are not feeling very safe where they are, and so you have the inverse.” Zara said that Sephardic Jews in Turkey were now applying in their “hundreds and thousands”. He added: “They are concerned – and I think the last few months have proved them right – because things are not stable in Turkey and maybe they will need to leave if things get worse.” Despite the emollient words from Madrid and Lisbon, though, some of those whose ancestors were persecuted and chased from their homes are still left pondering the epic injustice of it all. “To them it may be an offer of amends but to me it’s part of my cultural identity and heritage,” said Misty Kenney, who applied for Portuguese citizenship before the Brexit vote. “I’m surprised they didn’t start doing this years ago. If it wasn’t for the inquisition maybe I would be in Portugal today.” I don't think Brexit has anything to answer for, it is their individual perception of what might happen rather than what will happen. However I think it is wise if they are living in Turkey to seek other citizenship. |

395 British jewish people have applied for Portuguese citizenship under new rules which have just come in to try and make up for the horrific treatment Jewish people suffered in Portugal in the past.
No British jews have took up the similar offer from Spain. Could this be because Spain doesn't allow joint citizenship and Portugal does ? These people obviously want to remain British, but still want to be eligible for a European passport. It's not really a story of any significance, even by the engineers very low standards. |

So people are laughing off the fact that a large number of Jews no feel so unsafe here they are making plans in case they need to leave.
Oh and isn't attacking The Engineer rather than his post just a little sad? When I read the replies to his posts, it reaffirms my belief that Brexit will be a disaster for the UK. |

My guess would be none whatsoever. In the coming year, there will be far more Portuguese applying for Dual British citizenship than vice versa. Do you think this will be because of Portuguese being afraid of moving back to Portugal or is it more likely that they just want the best of both worlds ? |

Oh come on, don't be absurd, how many Jews do you think would feel safer in the EU than Britain ?

And tbh, if any of them read the typical pro-Brexit posts on here and regarded that as typical of the country, then yeah, they wouldn't feel safe here. |

Strange how none want to go to France another EU country, maybe because their schools now need armed guards due to some followers of the religion of peace.

I can only assume you think the people they spoke to it the article are not being honest then?

With the rise of Islamic extremism within the EU and the subsequent increase in attacks and murders of Jews across Europe, only a fool or a liar would make such a claim. |

Obviously this means that Brexit Britain is Nazi Germany 2.0 - sorry for shortcutting like that, I just wanted to save people the bother of having to read through all those tedious 'not quite saying' hints.
And somehow it's all absolutely nothing to do with a load of people suddenly realising that they now have a limited time to take up an offer that might take a while to process. Which of these two possibilities is more likely? Ooh I don't know, that's a tricky one, maybe there needs to be another 100 threads hinting at the wrong answer and stoking up the fear quotient because that always just works out so well for everybody. The more this is done, the more the extremists think they have 'friends' or that they are having an effect, the more they are likely to do something. Some quotes? Sounds like what the tabloids do - interview a load of people and pick the ones that best fit the narrative. So are we done here now? |

Yes any sensible person who read that article would glean that from it. Quote:

And you are entitled to your opinion. And tbh, if any of them read the typical pro-Brexit posts on here and regarded that as typical of the country, then yeah, they wouldn't feel safe here. For the Brits it is about EU travel and history, getting their ancestors Portugese citizenship back having lost it all those years ago when Portugal banished them. Do you see not Britain banishing them, Portugal. Spain is less favourable because they wouldn't be able to keep their British Citizenship which they obviously want to keep too. You didn't read this bit then “I think people are a bit nervous about this and therefore feel that having a European Union passport would be an advantage even if they are not necessarily planning to move to Portugal,” he said. “Having citizenship of an EU country has its benefits.” You choose to read anything in to it that you will to re-inforce the Remain campaign of mis-information. Of course those that seek a second citizenship in any country might not get it. Some countries are quite fussy about why people are seeking citizenship in their country. |

Pathetic. I dread to see the state of these boards if/when A50 is triggered.

What nonsense to declare yourself moral arbiter and state that 'typical pro-Brexit' debate on a DS forum would leave anyone feeling unsafe here.
You don't see Brexit's biggest cheerleader Farage snuggling up to Trump a problem. Trump meanwhile is snuggling up to Putin. Have a look at Russia's attitudes to blacks/ethnic minorities?LGBT communities. Look at the rise of the far right across Europe and the US. You really wonder why people are beginning to feel afraid? Dr Michael Rothwell, a delegate to the community, said it had received just five applications before Brexit compared with 400 in the two months following the vote.
That's an 80-fold increase. I just went over to the Guardian link and was looking for some such tiny number, and lo! I found it. Will this number be maintained? No, that's it. And this is the problem with all this stuff, it's basically a lie. It's propaganda. |

Join the dots. What you quote above has happened before on an even more worrying scale since the 1970's no one batted an eyelid. We have had ethnic cleansing in Europe in the 1990s remember who sorted that out! But of course it is scaremongering on a small scale on DS. Quite frankly these threads are becoming tedious and childish. |

Even if this had the outcome you seem to predict that of everyone feeling unsafe and actually being unsafe then I suggest the safest place to be would be Britain rather than mainland Europe so forget the second citizenship.

Yes there has been ethnic cleansing in Europe in the past - do you not see the shift in politics in Europe? Do you think there's the same appetite to oppose oppression and discrimination that there was five or ten years ago? |

That might be because a majority of us just voted to leave the EU because they object to our fellow EU citizens living here with us whereas the citizens of other EU member states - many of whom have higher rates of immigration from other EU countries than we do - have expressed no desire to do so. There's an old saying that actions speak louder than words and the referendum result speaks for itself. |

There are an estimated 300,000 British Jews - and apparently 400 of them made enquiries about getting Portuguese citizenship last summer. That's about 0.1 per cent.
But I suppose 0.1 per cent doesn't make such a good headline as an 80 fold rise starting from a base of 5. Now there may of course be other reasons why British Jews might feel less secure in a city like London - where most live - given rising anti semitism and anti Israel rhetoric which is growing due to changing demographics. But the Guardian doesn't reference that. That is a real story - this is a non story. No harm in maximising citizenships you are entitled to - people do it all the time! |
