9 July - Anniversary Games, London
4 Aug-13 Aug - IAAF World Champs, London
Within those 36 days of awesomeness, there's also the IPC World Champs (14-23 July) in the same stadium. Didn't think it would have the DL meet just 5 days beforehand (even though the meet has 'lost' the second day).

26 March - World Cross Country Champs, Kampala, Uganda
Add to that the World U18 Champs (12-16 July) in Nairobi, and sub-Saharan Africa hosts two World Athletics Series events in the same year. Can't remember the last time that happened.

22-23 April - World Relays C̶h̶a̶m̶p̶s̶, Nassau
Relay champs are in London. (Doesn't help that the likes of UKA are using the wrong name, either...)

23-25 June - European Cup (Super League), Lille
I prefer that to the name they actually use for that.

Other meets of note:
European U23 Champs, Bydgoszcz (13-16 July)
Commonwealth Youth Games, Nassau (19-23 July)
European U20 Champs, Grosseto (20-23 July)
Great North Run (10 September)

IAAF sets harsh new rules for Russian athletes wanting to compete.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/38501946

The IAAF tells pretty much a whole generation of Russian athletes to bog off and don't come back, basically, because I can't see many athletes other than those just starting their careers to be able to meet these criteria.

I see British Athletics has suspended Kadeena Cox from their World Class Performance Programme for taking part in The Jump. Can't say I blame them. I think it's a stupid decision by both her & Jade Jones to take part.

Yes the money is nice but you need to balance this against the obvious injury risk. Plus the world paras are now only 6 Months away, training for that should be the top priority at this point.

I can't understand why anyone would want to go on the Jump. There again I've never seen the appeal of bunjee jumping, rollercoasters, abseiling, pot holing, mountaineering or sky diving either.

Wow the Eaton's are retiring - yes both of them!

http://www.weareeaton.com

And on the Cox / The Jump story - I wonder if Greg Rutherford came off funding while he did Strictly?

Yeah, but what are the odds of getting a career-ending injury in Strictly v. The Jump, which is already established as the most dangerous show on TV since Pimp My Shark! got taken off the air back in the 80s?

Achilles, knee, back injuries all quite possible with the sort of routines they do on there, does smack of double standards.

And anyway, what I don't think has been factored into this decision by British Athletics is that unlike other athletes both para and able-bodied who could take these opportunities when they retire, it could well be that in 3 or 4 years time Kadeena's progressive condition means that will not be possible.

Good for them. Both a credit to the sport. And especially for Ashton, what's left? Now they can go and have multi-event superbabies

But would such kids compete for Canada or the USA?

I'm totally here for some Theisen-Eaton v Ennis-Hill #NextGen battles in 20-odd years time.

Surprised she hasn't made enough money since Rio so she wouldn't have to risk something like this.

Wasn't it the risk of injury which killed off superstars?

I guess if we compare the last season on both shows one has had a lot of serious injuries whilst the other hasn't.

Greg did strictly in mostly the off season when most athletes are not training.

Gutted Ashton & Brianne are retiring. Have loved watch in them both compete. Although I was a huge Daley fan growing up have to say that Ashton has overtaken him as the Decathlon GOAT.

As well as the clear injury risk, timing is a factor too. Only 6 Months before World Paras now.

Sebastian Coe, the President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), believes the new Nitro Athletics series is an example of "what needs to be done to revolutionise the sport".

The double Olympic champion, who became IAAF President in 2015, has been pursuing a strong reform agenda within the sport and believes athletics must look at methods to attract new audiences.

Organisers claim the six-team tournament in the Australian city of Melbourne will "revolutionise" global track and field.

The series begins next month and will see Australia take on Usain Bolt’s All-Stars, China, England, Japan and New Zealand in a new look athletics format at the Lakeside Stadium.

Competition is due to be held on February 4 and 9, before a final on February 11, with more "innovative" disciplines sitting alongside traditional track and field events.

A hurdles relay, the 60 metres "speed sprint" and an "elimination mile" have been confirmed as new disciplines.

Also included is the 150m, "a three minute run" and the 4x100m mixed relay, with all events classified as either power, technique, endurance or teamwork.

The 100m, long jump, pole vault and javelin are among the traditional disciplines that will take place.

Team performance rather than individual displays will be rewarded, as although some events will feature solo results, many will focus on combined placings and team efforts.

Points will range from 100 for first to 40 for sixth and last.

Teams will be able to utilise three strategies - the "Nitro Power Play", the "Nitro Steal" and the "Nitro Turbo Charge".

The Power Play allows double points for teams in one selected event, which will be made in advance and drawn by lot.

Using the Nitro Steal will pinch 50 per cent of an opposing team's points from a particular event, with the Turbo Charge applying only in the long jump.

Teams will be able to nominate one jump where an athlete must achieve a declared distance to gain a bonus.

There will also be penalties for false starts - 50 points for the first offence and then 100 for the second.

More on the Laura Muir run - she improved Liz McColgan's time by 14 secs!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/38514094

She is also doing the Edinburgh Cross-Country on Saturday and in fact will captain the British team - her event is the mixed 4x1k relay. This particular meet is a three-way team event - GB v USA v Europe. Should be a bit more competitive than usual.

Not that these grapes are sour or anything.....

Laura Muir's record-breaking 5K run may not be official, according to Liz McColgan who has held the 5,000m British indoor record for 25 years.
