Channels that could become FTA in 2017 or even appear on Freeview

Maybe more of the UK TV channels (Home Dave Eden W or even Gold)
Some of the HD channels such as those that belong to the ITV brand or CH4 stable

TCM
Sony Movies
Music Channels
Sky News HD

All speculation of course

You're rather missing the point, as they aren't on Freeview Lite - so would be of great benefit going FTA and on Freesat.

However, it seems highly unlikely, as the subscription money is probably what keeps them going.

Maybe UKTV will convert ALL 10 channels to Free

but then have them ALL in HD behind a paywall,
this would mean converting 4 or 5 to HD of them I think,

For a couple of yrs.

It would be a step forward

The bits in black, not a chance!

Possibly Dave but i don't see it somehow.
Most likely to see something from Channel 4 if anyone but beyond that, nope!

No chance of any of them. HD is still a premium experience reserved for paying customers.

It's not snobbery, it's just the reality of the situation. There is no business case for giving away HD.

ITV HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD, NHK World HD, RT HD, CNNi HD, Insight HD (And a couple of Asian HD channels)
Hm, all commercial channels that...oh look, give HD away for free!
And 3 of them, are some of the most watched channels in the UK too!!!!!!!!

Snobbery!

Well there's more pressure on the traditional broadcast channels to make their main channels available in HD to freeview viewers. The others you list hardly matter to anyone.

yes but ITV2HD, ITV3HD, ITV4HD, E4 HD, More4HD.
the same commercial stations that don't give HD away for free.

bottom line is that if it wasn't for the subscription model then those channels wouldn't even exist in HD.

so if there is any argument to make it needs to be directed at the channels themselves, and not the carrier.

i dumped Sky completely about 4 months ago and thought i would miss HD, but in reality i don't.
my eyes quickly re-adjusted back to watching mainly SD content (excluding the main free HD channels). HD is nice but it doesn't add anything to the content. if the program is rubbish it's still rubbish regardless if it's SD or HD.

There is a massive difference between SD and HD but if you've adjusted and genuinely don't miss it good for you. Watching any SD broadcast makes my eyes cry. But I've also been spoiled by some UHD stuff now so SD almost feels like black and white TV to me. It's nasty!

Most of the content from GOLD (older stuff) is shown on Yesterday (which is free)
Dave on freeview not freesat (yet)
Home (as above)
Only leaves Eden Watch & Gold left
CH4+1 HD on freeview
4/7 also on freeview
Tru TV closing could see either TNT/TCM in its place on freeview perhaps??

The "premium" is what Sky put on it by paying the broadcasters to be in HD behind the paywall. HD is good but in an age of connected TV and on-demand I don't believe it's Sky's primary focus any longer. Sky need to keep sharp with their on-demand offerings whilst the likes of other players gain more ground.

There will come a point where the money Sky throw at C4 to keep their off-spin channels pay in HD will be reduced. HD production and Playout costs have reduced to the point where HD Playout is now de-facto and SD down-converted. My prediction is that it will ultimately be C4 who break contract with Sky for one or more of their HD channels first, it may still be some time off but will happen.

c4 should have all their channels in HD available for free as it is partly funded channel.

oh i'm not denying there isn't a massive difference, but after a week the eyes have adjusted and it's not that much of an issue not having HD on some of the channels.

my TV is 4K also, and i've viewed bits and pieces in 4K (via netflix and amazon) but it's not something i would go out my way to seek out.

they will argue that the part this is funded is provided for free.
the other channels are commercially funded.

For me having a really good 5.1 surround setup, HD is not just about the picture but also the sound experience which is transformed from big standard 2.0 to 5.1. The verdict is out on 4K, I've not seen any linear broadcast 4K but it's got to be higher PQ than streamed Netflix in 4K.

Well what with having recently moved from one type of Supported Accommodation where I am sure I could receive all of the HD channels on Sky to another where they took up a deal of Sky Broadband as well as television including Sports where I now am unable to receive the main Sky channels in HD.

I for one am really hoping for more channels to be available in HD for free, I would hope that seeing as a certain Mr R. Murdoch now has full control of Sky especially after the Phone Hacking situation in which he was "Very Humble" that this year HD channels will become free to air.

No doubt very sadly this will not happen but despite this Sky will still have the cheek to announce an unfair price increase in September, just in time to make Mr R. Murdoch even more of a FATCAT for Christmas.

The annual price increase got moved to June a couple of years ago. Be interesting to see what impact full Murdoch control will have on the annual price rises. I still think if the family pack hits £40 this year it could result in a huge increase in cancellations.
