I'm guessing the Mail / Express will already have their fingers hovering over their standard 'anti BBC / left wing propaganda article' publish buttons?

Correct.

The Daily Mail, however has problems of its own, - poor circulation.

I think you mean right wing and anti-immigrant propaganda. Those newspapers aren't close to being left wing. They're rags.

Silent Witness has marked its 20th series with this special picture of the current cast.
The forensic crime drama returns to BBC1 on Monday January 2 with Emilia Fox making her 12 series in the guise of forensic pathologist Nikki Alexander. She joined the show in series 8, taking over the lead role from Amanda Burton.

Pictured above are the characters Thomas Chamberlain (played by Richard Lintern), Clarissa Mullery (Liz Carr), Jack Hodgson (David Caves) and Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox).
The show, which first aired on February 21 1996, is now the longest-running crime drama currently airing on TV anywhere in the world.

By the end of series 20 there will have been 380 episodes of the show, which is hugely popular around the globe.

Emilia Fox would have starred in 126 episodes of the drama. Liz Carr and David Caves would have starred in 50 and Richard Lintern in 40 episodes.

Guest stars over the 20 series have included Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbatch, Daisy Ridley, Nicholas Hoult, Jack Dee, Tamsin Egerton, Jason Watkins, Andrew Sachs and Emily Mortim

What’s the secret of Silent Witness’s longevity?
“It’s not your traditional whodunnit detective show. The actual premise is what’s so good about it – the concentration on the dead body and finding out what happened in the last 10 minutes of someone’s life.

“Silent Witness has a whole scientific and medical side that has certainly kept me interested. When I first went to a real-life autopsy for research, I was worried I would feel faint and hold up the whole process. But in fact it was riveting watching the work and the dynamic in the room between the pathologist, the police and the other people involved.”

The cases are fascinating, but how important are the relationships on the show?
“I love the family feel that Silent Witness has always had, and the great relationships on and off set. We have a short-hand when we’re acting with each other. You’re trying to find moments of drama in between exchanging information about cases. It’s all about how to invest some emotion and feeling into proceedings.”

Silent Witness first screened in the mid-1990s. Has it moved with the times?
“As science and forensic technology advance, we’ve had to keep up with that. And the issue we open with in the new series is a good example of Silent Witness being a current, relevant series. We kick off with an episode called Identity, which deals with a very topical issue relating to refugees. So we’re not just doing made-up whodunnit stuff – we’re trying to deal with issues that will provoke debate.”

The prosthetics are impressive on this show. Does that make your job a lot easier?
“The prosthetics are amazing, and they’ve opened this series with some of the best we’ve ever had. The bodies are so real. When you pick up the limbs, they feel the same weight as the limbs of a dead body. They feel cold, you can move the skin, and you’ve got all the right ‘gooey bits’.

“In one episode we have to drill into someone’s nasal cavity so, for people who like that sort of thing, there’s plenty of it – even though it’s the stuff of nightmares, really! When we are doing those scenes, they are so technical and we’ve got all the medical jargon to remember, but we have real-life pathologists telling us what to do.”

You’ve played Nikki for more than 12 years – what keeps you interested and motivated?
“I love the crime genre and always have. I was brought up reading crime fiction such as Miss Marple and Poirot, and I loved Sherlock Holmes – he’s my literary hero. So I have a vested interest, and being asked to do this as my job – well, it couldn’t be better.

“I love working on Silent Witness as much now as I did when I started 12 years ago – and I always said if I carried on loving it, I would carry on doing it! Also I like playing a character that I know very well because, in some ways, you get a little braver with your performance.”

Does it bother you when people say real-life pathologists would never get so involved in police investigations?
“People do worry about how you get pathologists doing police work and, yes, of course there’s dramatic licence, but it makes it easier for the writers and, as a result, the episodes are broader. There’s a really good mix of issue-led episodes, whodunnits, thrillers and action. And having the four of us together has opened that up – forensic science and pathology working side by side enables us to be more of a part of the detective team.”

Silent Witness starts on Monday, January 2 at 9pm on BBC1.

Digital Spy has a brand new article up.

http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/news/a8...fox-interview/

Silent Witness returns to BBC One tonight, kicking off its landmark 20th series with a topical tale about the refugee crisis.

Even after two decades, the long-running crime drama still pulls in big audiences - and its star Emilia Fox puts that down to the show's ongoing evolution.

Since it began in early 1996, Silent Witness has taken on at least three major forms: first as a star vehicle for Amanda Burton as Professor Sam Ryan, before transforming into an ensemble drama - with Fox's Dr Nikki Alexander joined by Dr Harry Cunningham (Tom Ward) and Professor Leo Dalton (William Gaminara).

Since 2014, the four-strong team has been made up of Fox, David Caves as forensic scientist Jack Hodgson, Liz Carr as his lab assistant Clarissa Mullery and Richard Lintern as Dr Thomas Chamberlain.

Reflecting on the series' origins and its remarkable success, Fox told Digital Spy: "Amanda Burton was one of those iconic female leads of the time, along with Helen Mirren [in Prime Suspect]... they were women in a man's world, at the forefront of their fields, and I think that was quite exciting at the time.

"She left that great legacy - and in no way did I ever feel that I could step into her shoes and I was worried about that. But the producers insisted it would absolutely be an ensemble with me, Tom Ward and Willie Gaminara… so the show changed, and of course now we've got a completely different regular cast, so it keeps the show evolving."

Fox herself has been on Silent Witness for 12 years - having shot over 100 episodes, more than double of what Burton managed - but insists that every new series throws up fresh challenges.

"I never feel like I know everything about the show or the characters, because new things come up all the time. I've certainly been massively challenged by the last story in this series and have done things that I've never ever done before on Silent Witness, or any other show!

"The running theme of the series is identity - and that one takes us out to Mexico, which we are filming in Tenerife, where I'm helping to identify the remains of victims of cartel violence…

"I feel as enthusiastic and passionate about it as I have always done. If I didn't feel that, then I wouldn't continue, but so far I always have and now I feel really proud of it, that it's reached 20 years."

The viewing figures - the last series averaged around 9 million each week - seem to suggest that fans share that enthusiasm, even if a government report from early 2016 argued that the BBC should axe its long-running favourites - including Silent Witness - in order to become "more distinctive".

"I think there has to be room for both new shows and returning favourites, doesn't there?" Fox said. "It seems obvious to me - if people are enjoying the returning series, then you want to bring them back again - but equally you want to be giving them new drama, as well.

"I think it's common sense, and it's achievable, to do both - and I'm very glad, and grateful, that the BBC have seen fit to keep Silent Witness. I just hope the audience continues to enjoy it."

There were two uniformed officers outside with them when they walked into that brief kidnap situation. They must have vanished into thin air.

How does that girl manage to walk into their workplace again and again? I work in a flipping library and you can't get through the main entrance without a swipecard.

Been very engaging, the trick with the fingertip and current to get the phone working.

The only bit of disbelief was seeing a Southern rail train running.
