Mysterious Cities of Gold was the best animated series of the 80s. It had a proper serialised story, it went on for ages and the story got crazier and crazier with what started as a quest for gold ended up with an ancient alien race getting involved.
Not just of the 80s, it's the best animated series ever made. It was smart, educational and adventurous. It was so good that when it returned to TV 30 years later they decided to continue the story instead of rebooting it - how often does that happen? It may be unique in being a kids show that made a second series when it's original audience had grown up and had kids of their own (the second series wasn't a patch on the original but still head and shoulders above most kids TV, I haven't seen the 3rd season yet).

It also has the best soundtrack for a cartoon - some of it is truely haunting.

Ulysses 31 comes in second place. Made by mostly the same team as Cities of Gold it's also a work of genius.

Finally Willo The Wisp. A show that works on a whole new level once you rewatch it as an adult.

One that I hated at the time, but have since grown to love it, was the original fuzzy-felt type animated version of The Moomins.
The best version of The Moomins IMO. I wasn't a fan of the cartoon version.

Finding a copy of the fuzzy felt version is near impossible.

Ive found the odd episode but the DVD is silly the price its fetching.

Ulysses 31 was a great show just a shame contender put together such a shabby DVD release when the French version is far superior.

Dungeons and Dragons is probably the only one I'd re-watch. Though I hear Thundercats is still watchable 30 years on.

Anybody know when Hero Turtles actually premiered in the UK?

Defenders of the Earth
Count Duckula
Victor and Hugo
Tiny Toons

Willy Fogg and Dogtanian were Saturday morning staples. I remember years later reading both books and saw the characters as their animal versions in my head

I also loved those "Once Upon a Time..." series. One was about the human body, another was about the history of America and I think there might have been one about inventors.

Actually a lot of those aren't 80s but they're just what I remember watching the most!

There was a really weird but funny cartoon back in the 80's called Murun Buchstansangur.
I used to watch that with my Dad when I was home. Awesome and odd.

I think it was shown 9.25am weekday mornings.I'm guessing this was during the school summer/christmas break.

I know they aired it during Wacaday but you know when ITV used to put kids stuff on at late mornings around 11ish? When Rainbow would be on, Lets Pretend I could have sworn one day I came home one day and caught the credits ending.

The first Season is very watchable. Some dodgy episodes and the episode order is all over the place, but Season 1 still mostly holds up well.

Imo, they should have ended the series with the 5-part/Movie "Thundercats Ho!" it would have made an excellent finale.

They tried to revamp things in Season 2 and introduce a whole new set of villains, but they were so dull and the plots just got lamer. In fact as a kid, I don't recall ever seeing anything other than Season 1 aired on TV over here.

Dogtanian - everything about it is sublime. They really don't make them like that any more.

My favorites were Centurions, Godzilla, Ulysses 31, Thundercats, Thunderbirds 2086 (an underrated show, IMO), Danger Mouse & Count Duckula and Battle of the Planets.
While BotP was indeed late 70's, it must have the most convoluted evolution of any cartoon series. Starting off as a Japanese show in about 1972, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, episodes would get edited by various production companies into series called G-Force and then Eagle Riders by the late eighties/early nineties. I remember the latter being shown on Fox Kids by, I think, the late 90's.

You can get the soundtrack here or on Google Play.
The comics artist Alex Ross (Marvels, Kingdom Come) released a superb 12 issue comic book Maxi-series called BotP but more based on SNTG as it relegated 7-Zark-7 (up there as one of The Most Annoying Cartoon Characters Ever) to only two cameo appearances. The 12 issues were edited into three collected editions by Titan Books that might be easier to find nowadays.
You can tell I'm a fan, can't you?!

I thought I was the only person who remembered that. ^^

Nobody has mentioned the awesome Battle of the Planets, although it may have been even earlier than the 80's and been late 70's

Edit: Apologies, it has been mentioned above.

I used to like The Space Sentinels, Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Dogtanian, Around the World with Willy Fog, Jamie and the Magic Torch, Chorlton and the Wheelies.

One that I hated at the time, but have since grown to love it, was the original fuzzy-felt type animated version of The Moomins.
Yes they have, posts #8 and #10. I loved that too.

Edit: Sorry, you acknowledged that later in your post.
