When we know hes going to survive all time, Its just wasted story telling and screen time.

It would have been a welcome twist if Sharon had died from all the "stress" she has from her invincible tough job and helping Phil, truly pathetic character

Because the producers don't want to admit that the character of Phil has become redundant and boring and should be axed.

I don't know how you can consider this wasted screen time when we have to put up with looking at the likes of Shakil and his awful bun head. That really is wasted screen time. For me he's the best character in the show and long may that continue. |

Steve has acted Phil's alcoholism brilliantly over the years and now the consequences are playing out.

As good as Steve is, his character needs a Max Branning-style break to reinvigorate him and hopefully go a different direction

Because they can't think of any new material for him, the character has gone through about a hundred different forms, from the softer brother to Grants harder edge, to becoming EastEnders JR Ewing and getting shot, to criminal mastermind, to family man.
The producers and writers have almost exhausted all possible avenues for the character, Steve is a great actor but the material isn't there anymore. I think they missed a trick a couple of years ago, when Roxy had the car accident and ran Emma over it should've been Phil ran over, causing him to lose the ability to walk. The power of seeing a once powerful character having to come to terms with all the psychological and physical trauma of being in that horrible situation, it would've caused real character growth not just for the character but for the Mitchell family. However the highers ups seem scared of breaking the status quo and would rather stick to what they know even though the character has been a shadow of his former self since Grant first left back in 1999. When Grant went crazy Phil was there to stop him from going that one step to far and killing anyone, that was Phil's purpose. They're two sides of the same coin. But without Grant, Phil had to evolve and they've taken him down the wrong route and now he is King Phil of Walford who may fall from time to time, occasionally from a bullet wound, but he always manages to pull himself back up and survive like a cockroach. |
