for the past month or so whenever i update or download a new app i have had to delete other apps as there is no space left on my phone, i did presume that once buying an SD card, you could change that to the default storage on the phone, which i did, but it only becomes storage for photos/videos etc and NOT for apps!
i definitely have no space and cant delete any apps as i use them all now so cant update any of them!
is there any way at all of downloading to SD to allow space?
or will i have to buy a new phone.

I seem to remember that this app used to be pretty good in the play store. It's called AppMgr Pro III

I think there is a free version to see if it helps you

Another recommendation for this app.

But the OP has to bear in mind that not all apps can be run from the SD card.

I'd also suggest the OP installs and runs The Cleaner app to clean things up and free up space on their phone.

Only some apps can install to the SD card. Not all of them.

Tunein and youtube both stay permanently on the internal drive.

Some apps I can download and install onto an android smartphone, but I can't do it on an android tablet despite both working almost identical in nature. A number of Taxi booking apps and apps like CM Locker for starters.

Which phone do you have? Android 6.0 introduced adoptable storage where you can integrate your internal and SD card storage. Not all manufacturers allowed this (Galaxy S7) but there were ways to force it.

You used to be able to root and install simple2ext or similar app and this allowed the SD to be seen as normal storage.
Depends on your phone and what OS are available.
Not for the faint hearted due to the very small risk of bricking it.
Though my old phone still works after doing this.

As mentioned above, Android 6 made a big change in the way SD cards work. They can either be set up as portable storage or internal storage. If using as internal storage then Android will automatically use them for app and data storage.
