At work on Thursday, we were notified that our lowly paid tea lady was going to be not more from the start of the new financial year. She came around about 10-00hrs, 1-sh and 3pm-ish, cakes pm, cream ones, yummy. The tea/coffe cost 10p and cream cake 40p and a sandwich from 80p, supported by our employer.


She was an old bag with no smile, always looking angry, no thanks or anything and always moaning and very slow. I won't tell you her nickname

We will miss the tea trolley and not the tea lady - but we will get hot and cold drink machines and snack machines.

Talking to cousins, friends/etc yesterday, tea trolleys, lady are a thing of the past. The one at my first work pace over 20 years ago was nice, but replaced by a motiveless loser and she got the sack, not sure why, good riddance. She was also late some morning and I had report her as she was just standing around talking to the toilet cleanner, that did the trick.

Tea trollies have their place as it means you don't have to go out if you don't want to. However, the price must be competitive, but paying the tea lady the minumum wage can't be justified imo as it can't be cost effect.

Btw, at my brothers office set on a tech industrial estate they have a "snack Waggon" come around twice daily. But tea and coffee is a qid, and cakes 1 quod and cold sandwich cheapest is 2 quid, but you can get hot foo - yummy

i used to be one.

coffee and sandwiches in the morning, tea and cakes in the afternoon.

and i did lunch in the canteen.

it was like dinner ladies with more swearing and a load of gropey old men.

We just get our own from the small kitchen and hope the kitchen nazis haven't thrown away any crockery deemed not required (even if it is wet and still draining).

when I worked on building sites the large ones had containers as little cafes, not bad prices and the 'tea ladies' were self employed and probably did alright at breakfast time

smaller sites, one of the labourers used to bring in a kettle and a stack of porn mags

Thanks. Our office small about 50/60 people, small kitchen, open plan type with fridge, hot/ice water on tap, couple of microwaves but they were moved to a closed room as some people cooked up a big smell. My company is international and tehy do look after their staff.

The tea lady we had, as expected was workshy and only did a few hours a week to keep with in the 16 hour rule and claim a load of benefits. Good ridance and I look forward to the machines, and me and a couple of work friends usally go out for luch about 2/3 times a week subject to weahter

It's unusual for a small office to have a tea woman, as not cost effective but does wonders for staff, ie no making sandwiches stopping at shops on the way to work - but it has to be cost effective. The minimum wage is costsing employers a lot of money and the one we had was forced into work by the dwp I think as she hated her job, always muttering under her breath and slow with handing the change back, and if you ordered more than 2 items, she got confused.

That was funny but the name many gave her was rude, very rude as he was rude, motiveless, no smiles, muttering, abrupt - all in all, a waste of space, but i got my creame cakes

don't worry about your employer, worry about yourself, you used to get a cup of tea for 10p, I'd put up with pretty much anything for a bargain like that

There are sort of tea ladies in our local general hospital. They are called "housekeepers" and do breakfasts, morning cuppa, lunch, afternoon cuppa, evening meal, and drink at bed time. Problem is that if they start at the other end of the ward from you the toast was cold and there would be no yummy porridge left

Not a tea lady but we do have an intern and that's basically what he does, along with anything else we can find for him to do that might actually be useful for him/us.
