So on top of holidays already costing far more due to Sterling being in the toilet, using our phones abroad is going to shoot up,

The EU has done a great job of stamping down on phone companies ripping us off when in other EU countries - don't expect Theresa May's government to be so tough on the likes of Vodafone post Brexit.

Its somewhat depressing how more expensive life is going to become post Brexit, for little discernible benefit.

When I go on holiday I am so busy enjoying myself that telephoning people seems to me to be an utter waste of time. Who do people 'phone when they are on holiday? You go on holiday to get away from it all.

Well its good you aren't bothered about this - however why not think a bit further afield than your own situation? Smart phones are fully integrated in how we live these days - massive increases in data costs will negatively affect many people.

Indeed.

It is a choice though.

Sounds like it might be pretty terrible if the European mobile networks choose to do this.

Holiday in Britain and don't phone anybody. "Problem" solved. You can thank me later. Cheers

Holidays aren't the only reason people travel to Europe.

I'm presenting an alternative choice which doesn't seem to have occurred to the OP!

The original story comes from the Financial Times which is the house paper of the financial elite who love the EU.

Only 'phone addicts who cannot walk down the road without a 'phone clutched in their hand. On holiday far more interesting activities are available. And such people will just have to add the 'phone costs to their holiday or holiday in the UK.

I would go anywhere to avoid people gawping at their phones and not watching where they are bloody going.

I imagine most Brexit voters don't even know how to use a mobile phone, let alone will go abroad with one (why would they want to go to those dirty foreign countries after all?), so they won't be bothered. They still have their own post-office rented telephones with dial!

I thought we all knew by this point how dictorial Brexiters are. It's all about what THEY want not anyone else, and if they don't want us to holiday in eveil foreign countires, then we don't. God forbid anyone wants to live their lives differently to them, especially if it involves interacting with those strange foreign types. We all have to holiday in Skegness and Clacton and be happy about it.

I'm not a huge traveller myself (and I think this is the most unimportant news for me regarding Brexit), but...

When I go on holiday I am so busy enjoying myself that telephoning people seems to me to be an utter waste of time. Who do people 'phone when they are on holiday? You go on holiday to get away from it all.
... business people, travelling on business?

People who don't want to be petrified of turning their phone on for fear of racking up a huge bill by doing nothing at all?

People who need to communicate while they're on holiday? Maybe on your Thomas Cook all inclusive package deal everything's sorted for you, but others prefer to take a more DIY approach.

It's a bit of a swizz anyway. Roaming costs the mobile operators a fraction of the retail price that they charge. Why is it such a bad thing to force costs to come down?

You mean there are other sorts of phone? Well, I'm amazed - when did this happen?

Which generally cost massive amounts of money for very little value (look at how much is charged to roam in places like the US). Try again.

Oops. I downloaded an email with an attachment... better take out a loan to pay for the bill.

Not the only rocket going up to shake the complacency of Brexit. Better get used to it and buy a hard-hat. Things are going to get much worse.

What benefit is there for a company to have to jump through hoops to end up paying more than they do under the current arrangement, which is governed by EU law?

A lot of responses on this thread from Brexiteers are farcical. Just because they may not like to use their phone on holiday, many people do - just look at how many people post facebook photos whilst away. When travelling my phone has been an absolute godsend to me, such as when getting lost on foreign roads or when I am looking for decent restaurants nearby in the area I am in.

Traveller's guides are available to read at your leisure as are maps and an abundance of information in hotels.
