Free sat newbie.help
My daughter has moved into a house with just a satellite dish fitted, she doesn't want Sky and Freesat looks a better option. The dish only has a single cable from it, and as she's not bothered about recording anything am I right in thinking just a basic freesat box would be ok. She borrowed a sky box and it worked fine. Only thing is she would like the catch up services on Freesat, how does this work, what sort of box do I look for, if it's any help she has fibre broadband with the router in same room as TVs. I can't seem to find a box which is wireless if that's what she needs or a Ethernet cable connection. Any help advice appreciated. Would prefer to buy whatever she needs from Amazon or reputable dealer as opposed to EBay.
Thanks |

Look for Humax HB-1000S (Ethernet cable or additional Humax WiFi dongle)
This STB does not record, but an USB HDD can be added. You can buy refurbished units direct from Humax for £49 with 1 year warranty see here. |

You can get a standard HD Humax HB-1000S box from the usual retailers for around £79 - £ 89.99 (2 year guarantee) and a refurbished model with a 1 year guarantee direct from the Humax website itself for just £49 (a so-called Manager's Special). This will give you everything your daughter wants. It has <freetime> and all the catch-up services as well as an Ethernet connection. You can also buy a Freesat Wi-Fi dongle for around £39 - not all dongles will work with the box so better to go for their one. If you want you can also connect an external HDD box to the unit and record however since the box only has one tuner you can not record a different channel than the one you are watching/tuned to but for casual recording when you are not at home it is ideal.

Would this work better with Ethernet cable connection to router, it's easy to connect to and cheaper than £39 for wi fi dongle.

Yes ethernet should be more reliable than wi-fi, and shouldn't require any setting up.

Purchased new Humax one for her from amazon, it's connected to network with Ethernet. I've not seen it as she lives some 300 miles from me, but she is very happy with it. It's been mentioned that they will probably buy a small portable hard drive to use with it to record when she's out or away. Can it use any small portable hard drive, if so is it able to record tv onto and also keep music, photos on, not for use on tv, just to store stuff on, looking at 2tb drives from amazon, most are usb3 is this ok.
Thanks |

Thanks http://uk.humaxdigital.com/support/?...product_id=857 and read page 21. That tells you all about recording on the device. The most important part is that the drive once formatted by the Humax for recording purposes cannot then be used by any other device. So while you can plug it into the Humax and record telly programmes on it it may well be that you cannot use it on a PC for any other purpose. |

Thanks https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/list...aqs-with-links Make sure any usb3.0 drive is labelled usb2.0 compatible. A 1TB should be large enough for just recording to. |
