Hi and happy new year to you .. can I just ask a dumb question about a Toshiba laptop my dear old mother bless her. Has given me her old laptop now it boots up ok no problem there, but after a few minutes instead of going into the desktop and apps I get a blue screen and it asks for a password now no bugger knows what password my dear old ma has used. She being old and remembers not,
Can I somehow override the password ? As my youngest daughter would love to use it
Again thanks for helpful replies

I would suggest doing a clean install of Windows or your preferred OS.

I had this on a dell laptop here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-xQgP24i-s
I found a password generator and this cleared the system password
but if its just a windows password its very easy just to reinstall by having an ISO and a usb stick or CD.

If it's the operating system password (Windows) then I don't think there is any way, but Windows can be re-installed and the laptop used.

If it's the BIOS password then I don't think there is any way to bypass it.

To avoid confusion just take a picture of this screen that appears and display it here with this:

Re-installing Windows will delete all the old information on the laptop.

Getting a version of Windows for free might be a bit tricky. The laptop will likely have a licence on the underside. It''s it readable then that version of Windows might be getable.

If it is a BIOS password the Toshiba screen appears instantly when you power up and Windows will not start to boot until the password has been entered. In the past Toshiba dealers and repair centres had software to clear it if you proved ownership but no idea where you would find one these days.

So since it's not instant then it's a Windows password.

Maybe it could be guessed, or perhaps the same password she is using on her latest laptop?

Google the model number and do a factory restore.

Thanks for constrictive advice, total factory reset will be the last resorts, but looking more likely by the minute

There are ways but realistically if you are going to hand the machine to some one else its better to wipe it anyway as you don't want your kids seeing that their gran had a fetish for somethings etc.

Lol perish the thought but nothing on laptop I'm sure. But of course we the parents would scrutinized first. This would be a lot less time consuming than a clean wipe

This is going back a few years and it was with either XP or Vista and I had to deal with a login password. I recall getting into safe mode and then deleting the password option via Control Panel then User Accounts or something like that.

If it boots up ok then the only password required would be the log in password ? or am I missing something .....

If you've got a Windows disk and you're OK using command-line, there's a password reset method that involves swapping ease of access (utilman.exe) and cmd.exe. Then you reboot, and when the computer asks for password you click ease of access which gives you a cmd window. Then use 'net user' to change the password. When normal service is resumed, you swap the two files (utilman and cmd) back to their correct locations.

Sounds harder than it is. Google it eg here.

I've only done it with Win7, but I'm sure the principle applies to other versions. Note - typos in cmd can f*ck your computer.

Have you tried 'password'? I'm told that often works. Then there's '1234567890'. That often works, too.

Sorry, I read this earlier and thought the login password was "password"

Have you tried your mum's name, name of pets and children?
Tried going into safe mode horror it wants a password
I think there was a another, Admin, account available in safe mode for Windows Vista but not for Windows 7.

A factory restore is actually quicker, as you don't have to mess about uninstalling programs, wiping history etc.

Toshiba use 0 (zero) to restore from HDD and F12 from external media (eg CDROM). I assume you need HDD but this will only work if the original Toshiba restore partition is still there.

Either way you get a simple menu with several options.
