I've never understood why people are allowed to bring these things to football matches, they can be dangerous and I don't get why they aren't confiscated when people go through the turnstiles, in this age of terrorism surely every fan should be searched before they are let in and if found with one then they should be told to go away.

The effort of up to 70,000 searches would take hours and even I know how to evade a basic pat down should I want to get past with something like a flare.

I imagine that a person would be turned away if they were searched and those items were found but, as maxatoria said, it'd be impossible to search everybody going into a football match!

ETA: Mind you, I went to see Billy Joel at Wembley Stadium, over 70,000 people and most of us were searched - my bag was searched 3 times as they didn't believe I'd never had drugs in there People turn up hours early for concerts though.

it's ridiculous, leave these flares to the latin countries, us Brits tradition was always to celebrate with throwing bog rolls onto the pitch

Is that to go with our shitty international football record?

I remember some poor chap died after being hit by a flare at a football match.

Absolutely mindless to light one near others, and criminal to fire them into a crowd.

I think so, it was mostly popular in the 70s, when believe it or not our national team was even worse than it is today

The way to prevent it is to start punishing teams with points deductions if it happens regularly.

Izal? A brick would probably be less damaging

That would only encourage rival fans chucking flares.
Easy enough for a Liverpool fan to go to a Man Utd v Hull game and start letting off smoke bombs in the expectation that Man Utd would lose points.

Flawed argument. Unless you search every single person thoroughly then there is no way you can stop it.

You punish the team for "Failing to control their fans", which they can do already, not the home team.

I think you've missed the point of what was said.

A fan could go to a rivals game in the home end, which doesn't feature their own team, and start trouble to get them docked points.

Is that really very likely? I'm not saying it's impossible, but it seems to be clutching at straws that it would be a major issue.

I don't think it's very likely.

However I don't think it's very likely that a club could conduct full body searches on every fan either.

Rival fans hire planes at £600 a pop to fly messages over stadiums. It is entirely likely that rival fans of the big teams would try that with flares.

Smoke bombs I can understand, if its a crap match, lets block our view from the dire showing and smoke there hell out of the place, and the flares......well they just light up the occasion

In all seriousness, those who take these things to matches are of a different mind set, the wrong kind

Wales v Romania in Cardiff 1993

I was in the same stand and saw it come shooting across from the other stand at unbelievable speed.

There'd been a trend for Wales fans to wave flares for the previous year or so. This was a marine distress rocket though.

Well when Liverpool won at the death at Goodison before Christmas, someone threw a smoke bomb on the pitch and all the pictures looked epic with mad celebrations and players emerging through the smoke.

I do enjoy the way flares and smoke bombs look at the football sometimes.

When Manchester City played Manchester United a few years back the lights were dimmed before the game, images of blue moons were projected around the ground and City's anthem of Blue Moon was played over the sound system. At the same time a couple of bright red flares were lit by United fans. Looked good to me, I like the pretty colours - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBil-Yxq3o4

They are dangerous though.
