What do you think could be the reason why so many Celebrities passed away this year
It cant be just a coincidence that so many Celebrities passed away this year. And these people are the greats in acting and music. There has never been a year like this before. Why was this year the one year where so many greats passed away

I think it really is just coincidence. Someone in a newspaper was saying it's because the baby-boomer generation of rock stars have been abusing drugs for most of their careers and it has caught up with them, but that makes no sense - why just this year? It's just sheer chance.

Two possible reasons are a) that there are a lot more celebrities around than there used to be.
There was a music programme "Which is the best decade to listen to music" and the answer put forward was NOW. As we can now listen to music from the 50's, 60's 70's 80's etc etc In the 80's you could not listen to music fomr the 90's or 00's as it had not been made yet. Similarly we have people who became famous in the 50's onwards (and older) still alive, plus new people becoming well known at the moment. Another factor b) might be "delayed substance abuse" effects. Not pointing any fingers or criticising anyone, but it is a fact that a lot of artists died in the 60's and 70's and 80's from recreational drug overdoses. Those of their contemporaries who survived that era, but did have large habits for these types of drugs, could now have undiagnosed conditions as a result, like weakened heart,, less resistance to infections / cancer etc. |

Over the years it has become easier and easier to become a 'celebrity' so the amount of celebrity deaths will only go up over the coming years and decades.

The common factor is death. It'll get us all so it's obvious that each year a number of people including celebs will die.
It's really that simple. |

I hear a rumour that sometimes when people get older or very ill that they 'die' (whatever that is).
It's very probably just another batshit crazy conspiracy theory but one can never quite be sure. |

The later part of this decade has put them into that age bracket where they are going to start keeling over. It has been a coincidence that we've lost a few 'greats' in such a close period of time, but no doubt we'll lose a few well known faces next year as well. What do you mean, can't be coincidence? Do you believe there is a greater power at work or someone knocking them off intentionally? Maybe it's the Russians! |

I was thinking before why is it that all these singers die young Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Whitney, David Bowie, Prince, George Michael, to name but a few. I know drugs and drink are involved with some of them but it's still tragic or whatever word you want to use.

Some of them got old, some of them had health/drug problems, some of them were both old and had health/drug problems. It happens.

Will be interesting to see if 2017 follows suit. |

I can't see the next few years being any different. Popular culture really exploded from the late 50s to the early 90s before the internet splintered everything off into niches. The people that got famous in that time are getting up there in age now and a lot of them lived to excess in terms of drink and drugs and fornication, at least back then.

I suppose someone who was famous in the 60s or 70 would have been known to everyone because there was only 2 or 3 TV stations and 1 pop music station on the radio............. On the other hand today's mass media and 24 hour news means that we've heard of people from all over the world........ |

I don't think celebrities really resonate today like they did in the past, there is too much going on, thousands of TV channels, the internet, mobile devices. There aren't that many household names anymore that literally everyone in the country would have heard of. If you look at record TV ratings, most of them were set in the era previously mentioned and are unlikely to ever be broken.
